Systems Course Win In August i960 After graduating from the Aerospace Systems Course in July 1S70 he was posted to the Maritime Proving and Evaluation Unit Sum E I as the Senior Navigator and Unit Technical Co ordinator With the commencement of the Long Range Patrol Aircraft program in September 1973 he was posted to National Defence Head yean of a Bachelor of Arts In political science brings hope for future Camp Quality a camping and sup port program for children with life- threatening cancer is In Its final preparations for establishing lis first Cancer Camp to be near Durham Ontario Aug 1419 The staff will meet May on the campgrounds for one of the many training sessions prior to the com mencement of the camp Children who are diagnosed with cancer frequently find themselves friendless lonely and isolated The camp Is an opportunity to forget their illness If at all possible to en Joy a break away from the hospitals and to Just have fun like any healthy youngster at a summer camp This opportunity gives the children strength and hope Three program directors for Camp Quality have been busy throughout the year lining up quality programs for the children to par In Although there are the usual activities such as archery canoeing fishing derbies craft work horseback riding swimming and much more the children are never pressured into participating They have the right to choose what they want to do with the emphasis being placed upon the child in order to give them some control over their lives once again Sometimes the children might want to sit under a tree and watch an activity and thats all right Camp Quality strives to allow children to be children again to have fun to participate in exciting activities to make new friends and as far as possible to be removed from all stress at least for one week of their lives The weeks camp will hopefully give the families of these children a much needed rest know ing that the finest program has been elected to keep their child happy A oneonone companion is assigned to ensure the childs safety These companions and other staff members come from many locations throughout Ontario Camp Quality demands of their staff not a week of partldpa tion with the children but to develop an ongoing relationship throughout the year Each volunteer staff member Including our medical staff have gone through a series of Inter views with the executive and mutt agree upon and sign a strict code of behavior before becoming a member of the staff Most portantly we want to ensure the families and campers that the necessary medical supervision is an Integral part of every camp plan through qualified Oncology Specialists Camp Quality has a medical staff of five volunteers which come from three major com munities throughout Ontario in eluding Toronto Sick Children Hospital It is the hope that this cam ping experience will be such fun for the children that they will look for ward to and anticipate their next camp Several months after the camp the entire staff the campers and their families will gather together for a weekend reunion to not only reflect upon the weeks camp but to receive their pktornl log books and their personalized video tape of the summer camp The memories from these special events and others will hopefully sustain them In the weeks and months ahead as they continue their medical treat Camp Quality Is all about hope hope for the future There are no age restrictions for our campers to attend Camp Quail ty welcomes very young children who can tolerate being away from their parents The oldest are usually 10 and sometimes these older children come back as our future staff members Camp Quality does not charge a fee to the campers or their families Funding Is totally by tin community for our needs of the children and their families The administrative costs are funded totally by the Reorganiz ed Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints which Is the sponsoring organization Part of Camp Quality philosophy Is not to accept government funds in order that any money available might go directly Into research far cancer and find a cur so that one day we may need to close our doors and move on to another need within the com muni tv By not depending on funds the community as an opportunity to be involved in the Uvea of these children through their gifts of skills time or finance Our facilities are rented so as not to tie up additional funds on bricks and mortar All community funds go directly to programming not to the upkeep of facilities which lay dormant for most of the year or to staff wages Transportation to and from our residential camp is provid ed Tree of charge During the week we welcome our children to contact home at any time
