the HERALD Thankless job for Peterson Home Newspaper of Hills Established A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company Limited Guelph Street Georgetown Ontario DONRRANDER Publisher and General Manager EISHMAN Advertising Manager Phone 2201 SECTION A TilEIIEHAU Wednesday June Get Georgetown Main Street will be teeming with activities this weekend as Pioneer Days is staged once again The intention of the weekend is to turn the spotlight on downtown businesses and let people know what there is for them to enjoy when they visit the downtown core There will be an endless variety of feature attractions to take in which will appeal to every member of the family The premise of Pioneer Days is a good one In many communities like Georgetown there are cons tant changeovers in businesses What was at a particular location a year ago may be gone and another shop of great interest may have taken its place But if there one thing that can be said of Georgetown s downtown it is that is unique in character Because of its size there is a warm sense of close knit spirit among the store owners and customers readily pick up on this as they go from one store to the next It not surprising that movie makers have chosen downtown Georgetown for the location of several film shoots When you consider the amount of effort that went into finding a main street location that would be suitable for filming these movies it indeed tells you Georgetown has something very special So while enjoying the action that will be ongoing this weekend downtown in Georgetown take a moment to real ly see where you are and what is offered Pioneer Days give everyone the opportunity to get reac quainted with an old friend that is never far away A tip of the tarn nothing but trouble Mr Peterson might well be grumbling Each time the Bank of Canada raises Interest rates blame Mr Peterson If things t so good in Ontario the rest of the try would not have lo suffer they say Quebec Premier Robert says rising interest rates will divide Canada into two countries a rich Ontario and a poor everybody else And the presdient of the Canadian Association chides Mr Peterson for not reining In Ihe economy by spending less Mr Peterson is the first to agree the central bank is wrong In keeping rates so much higher In Canada than they are in the United States But lie would not agree lhat he is being fiscally irresponsible Quite Ihe contrary In the recent pro vincial budget Ontario raised taxes and took other steps to contain swelling deficit TWO TOOLS While Ottawa relies on monetary Editors notebook By Mike Turner Herald Editor I had my first experience with a Highlands Game at the Georgetown Fairgrounds Saturday and what can I say but it was It was quite Impressive to see the fanfare that comes along the games II a day when those who are Scottish are proud and those who t wish they were Not that those of the Scottish per mind sharing the tun the rest of us however And that makes for an exciting and fun day After all you be hard pressed to trace the clan names like Markovic Barkauskas and in any of the history books pertaining to Scot tish heritage But these were Ihree of the names or competitors who competed at the heavyweight level in the various events that showcased pure strength coupled with coordination And quite frankly If these guys want to wear a kilt It entirely up to them I t see anyone Saturday snickering behind their backs These guys are forces to be reckoned with All of hem seemed pretty good natured but I t want lo see them riled It not surprising that the Georgetown Highland Games have become one of the best drawing events of the kind staged throughout Ihe province Apparently the local games always seem fall on a weekend with great weather No one I spoke with could ever remember it raining at the Georgetown games At any rate the organizers of the event deserve a lot of credit for their efforts In staging the games and a For everyone who attended Scot tish or otherwise it was a day of en joyment and good clansmanshlp A few people will have to be excus If ihey were still rolling heir s Monday morning At editors desk I naturally field a lot of requests for coverage from the community on a wide assortment events And where ever it possible we try to accommodate to the best of our capabilities Sometimes it tough though Manpower can be stretched so far and then something snaps somewhere along the way Don 1 get me wrong None of us are in this because we expect to work ninetofive inside of a 40hour week But sometimes it can get lo be a little much when things really pile up We re only human and can be in two places at the same time The best way to ensure an event can be covered la lota of advance warning Some people seem to think a few hours Is lots of advance warning but this the case Call early and then follow up with another call closer to the day of the event There are a couple of other things to keep In mind as well may sec someone from the Herald out taking pictures at some event and you may even be the focus of a few shots But as nice as would be we can t use all the pic tures and we ask a little understan ding Before signing off I d like to make one more point And It also comes under the were only human category Accidents will happen from lime to time That perfect shot may be far from perfect when it developed In fact it can be downright unuseable Sometimes the chemicals in Ihe darkroom can find their way into Ihe developing process at the wrong time thus botching up what would otherwise be good photographs Everyone has their own little story tell about goof I was sure I film in the camera before I took we shots What do you mean the fix goes In after the developer But I didn I know there was film In the camera when I opened It If someone seems to be getting a Utile pleased with themselves casually reminding them of Utile mistakes can have a real humbling effect I m not trying lo make excuses The simple fact remains we are answerable for our actions funny six months later is pretty frustrating when It happens But remember we reonly human Your Business By Business Analyst policy to help manage growth it has all abandoned its other tool fiscal policy government and taxing Mr Peterson cannot control in tercst rates but he can raise taxes and cut spending In order for Mr Peterson to rein In the provincial boom single he would have lo cut ding dramatically not an alluring prospect That where John Crow governor of Ihe Bank of Canada comes In As Michael Manlord chief economist at Merrill Lynch Canada puts It Mr Crow Job Li to take away the punch bowl before the party gels out of hand With luck Mr Crow will not have to play the bad guy much longer and Mr Peterson will be off the hook Although forecasters are still a growing of thought holds that interest rates are at or near their peak The Canadian dollar Is high enough the U S dollar crisis la drawing to a close and growth Is about slow bo the theory goes It could well be true RATES MAY FALL Sherry Atkinson chief economist in the United States for Ihe current quarter John Grant chief economist at Wood Gundy sees the banks prime business lending rale In Canada peaking about now and falling to per cent by the end of next year Mr Manford of Merrill Lynch on the other hand fears that Inflation Is about to rear ita head again buoyed by mounting wage demands If he right rising interest rates will soon be blamed on beleaguered workers who are trying to stay on top of their rising mortgage payments Letters Citizens
