Wednesday June lM GIFL report Howells on a tear It seems the team of late to reckon with In the GIFL Is the hud fighting Howells Plumbing team Their pit hitting and defensive facets of the game have been right up to form They have won their lost our games In a row twice beating the second- place Bluebirds and once beating the third place Mike Adams Realtors On June first place was once again up for grabs between and the Bluebirds But this night belonged to MVP of the game Al Scott Playing behind winning pitcher Jon Ham mer belted an In the park home run and also had the other two Plumbers Bob Anderson made some excellent defensive plays at second base Brian McKen lie took the loss for the Bluebirds That some eve of June 20 saw the Apple Auto crew pick up only their third point of the GIFL standings It was hummer of a game bet ween the and the Mike Adams Realtors Seven tight Innings not a run scored Jeff Haines Bad yet another 11 strike out night throwing a three- hitter Chris was also near flawless with a league best one hit ter Both hurlcrs were selected their teams MVP Glen hit well for Apple This was a great pitching duel tobehold Now to the busiest night of the league Wednesday night June saw the Georgetown Reds off against the Mike Adams Realtors This game was well played and well pitched But the Reds squeaked out a victory giving them their third win of the cam palgn They are definitely out to let their presence be known around the fastball circuit The following game had the second place Bluebirds meet up with the Apple squad Game MVP for the Birds went to George Shepherd for hurling six and a third strong Inn ings In a reverse role situation Big Mack earned the save Jeff Haines took the loss for Apple Final score for the Birds Apple sure are struggling Howells to do battle with the Georgetown Reds Don Johnson started on the mound for the Plumbers throwing three shut out In nlngs with Jon Hammer corning In for middle relief Johnson belted a two RBI single scoring Glenn Sproule and Bob Marchand Losing pitcher Joe Deforest Reds game MVP couldnt get any offence from his teammates Hammer finished off the Reds earning the victory with fellow teammate Don Johnson earning MVP for Howells It seems this year that the Plumbers have acquired the pit chers they so desperately needed last year when they had to give up Jon Hammer to university Finally the late game on Sunday turned from a fairly dull lacklustre affair Into an exciting extra Inning affair between the Bluebirds and Mike Adams Realtors For one reason or another the Realtors starting pitcher Ray the Parch Peacock with a name like that 1 think he is on the wrong teaml seems to throw the Bluebirds right out of sine He threw five good innings of ball only to be relieved by tnclr premier Chris The game stayed tied In seven regular Innings But with on base In the eighth Doug Barnes MVP for M Adams belted a two- run dinger to seal the fate of the Birds Big Mack looked stunned as he was handed the loss Final score 53 for the Realtors Team of the week goes to first place Plumbing for some top notch offensive and defensive playing to put them at the top of the heap FUTURE GAMES Wed June Georgetown Reds vs Apple Mike Adams Wed July vs Bluebirds Mike Adams vs Ap ple MlktAdlmtRollr Gmcsewvn Apple United making a good showing so far Soccer By ALEX TOUGH The premier tournament In the province must surely be the Ontario Cup The youth section of the Georgetown club have tended to Ig nore the cup for the past few seasons reckoning that It is putting dollars to bad use In sponsoring team entries In view of the records and standards the reasoning is fairly valid However our new senior club Georgetown United or Peel as sup porters and some players refer to the team are making a good show so far The team is a very young squad apart from the goalkeeper Ray Ellis a founder member and taking time to settle At this level players have to be good and locally we no longer have sufficient to pro vide a suitable team As a result the majority of the players come from out of town On Friday last the team came good by handing out a defeat to league leading Armourdale for their first league win Steve Callaghan took full advantage of a slack back pass and harassing by Chris to open the scoring With 10 minutes left for play Scott Dymond a hard working midfielder broke through to slot home the second goal The visitors hit back with a goal of their own after the culmination of some cutesy defensive work to make the score respectable The of right winger Donato was a telling factor In the second half Spine 11 a work continued on Sun day in the Ontario Cup second round win over Insula San Grasso by Two runs and crosses in the first five minutes led to the opening goals by Stevo Callaghan and Chris Too much reliance on a fairly well worked offside trap led to the visitors goal before the half Further goals from Dean Nelson enigma who sometimes does not show although having ability to play at this level In the next round the United are away to Burlington Nats or Hamilton Pipers The indoor facility at Dixle401 hosted the visit of former Scotland and Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson and his goalkeeper coaching school this weekend Three local goalies attended with their coaches Jennifer Apgar and Alan Jonossen and BUI Harrisons under goalie were our representatives at the school the first of its kind Goalkeeplng Is specialized trade In the game and worthy of special treatment Generally speaking goalies are born not made Coaching of this nature can only benefit the players Are you aware that we have a local qualified and registered referee who has Informed players that he will caution any player who kicks the ball above knee htightV Ontario Cup excepted Local players Laurie Traynor Chris and Glen Bradley lit In well enough with Howie Oram an Cnryf In and 78 who misses the ball at a drop ball etc This appalling lack of knowledge of the rules of the game and how to apply them brings the game and Its good officials Into disrepute It also demonstrates that we have a grave shortage of officials who are knowledgeable and compe tent Inter working In wonderful world of newspapers is the Immediate In troduction to a new community one receives after bavins relocated Since arriving in Georgetown a couple of months ago Ive met several members of the local spar- ting community and have managed to find my way around the block once or twice And Its all part of the Job In the short time I been In Georgetown thus far its been plain evident that this Is a community From the traditionally strong Canadian sports such as hockey and curling to lower profile pastimes like baton twirling and I was somewhat familiar with some aspects of Georgetowns rich sports heritage before came here The Haiders with wealth of in termediate and senior hockey laurels well known throughout On tario was a name I had come across frequently while perusing the sports pages back In my hometown of Seville And as a member of that As an avid rugby fanatic I was more than pleased to discover the existence of a rugby here In town But an even more surprising discovery came when I learned that lacrosse was alive and nourishing in Acton As a former player it did my heart well to find this granddaddy of Canadian sports thriving and receiv ing support rabid albeit small from a dedicated bunch of tea It brought back some fond memories of my own days as a minor lacrosse player when a bunch of high school buddies and I cramm our bodies Into the cramped con fines of a van and travelled to such exotic locales as Kincardine Corn wall Stratford and In pursuit of that orange We had a coach called Moby dubbed by a rival fan in Kingston who was a rather portly fellow okay okay He was fat Moby was also a somewhat emotional guy given to outbursts of loud rantings and ravings behind our bench Once In a juvenile tournament In Kincardine he screamed for Crawford to hit the floor Trouble was we had two guys named Crawford on our team Which one coach they iriauired in practised unison I dont care bellowed Moby Just get out there I At any rate since those halcyon days the sport has experienced some difficulty in oncestrong lacrosse communities In others It has disap peared entirely As the official tlonal sport of Canada Its nice to see a community in Hills working toward preserving the game To me Its also suggestive enthusiastic sporting nature of Halton Hills that ve detected in my brief so far tenure at The Herald There are a lot of people behind the scenes and In the forefront who moke sports go In this area Ive managed to meet some of you and Ive also managed to eventually navigate my way to some of fields rinks and ball parks Im looking forward to meeting more of you out there and I an ticipating more pleasant discoveries In the Hills sports fraternity Mayor Rust Miller demonstrates his bowling form at the opening
