NOTICE GEORGETOWN HONDA JUL SALE J 873181B ill theHERALD Sports i and and Recreation For 30 Years We Have Delivered SECTION THE HERALD Wednesday Jnly 18- Page I Retired coach leaves a rich legacy in Georgetown There will be one glaring absence at next fall and its one thai will likely take students and staff alike some getting used to After years of teaching and coaching at the local high school Kewley has retired Since 19G4 the Scottishborn mathematics teacher has been fix lure In athletics and she leaves a rich legacy of sport behind her highlighted by her introduction of girls soccer and field hockey at the school Both programs arc flourishing at GDHS and it is In no small part due to the persistence and dedication of I dont think Im a great coach said Kewley during an interview with The Herald last week But Im enthusiastic and that rubs off Kewlcys enthusiasm for sport and teaching was bom on early age I never wanted to do anything but teach she recalls I guess I was a bossy little brat A native of Ayr Scotland the ex Rebel mentor gravitated sports naturally I was always interested in sports and 1 played them all she said favorite sport and the one that won her greatest acclaim was field hockey She chased the hard wooden ball for eight years and Qualified for the southwestern Scot tish finals also played basketball winning her varsity colors at Glasgow University while perform ing as a guard I was a fivefoot fourInch guard so you con sec that basketball was not a high profile sport tnerc she jokes coaching career however did not begin immediately upon her graduation from Glasgow I During her tenure at the college she met a young Candian ice hockey player named Herb Kewley Herb was ploying professional hockey for the Ayr Haiders one of seven clubs In a Scottish league assembled by his father after the Se cond World War The native of Strat- ford Ontario played in Ayr for two years and wncn he returned to Canada in 1954 it was with by his side as his new bride After spending six months in Toronto the couple settled in St Thomas and raised three children Ted Beth and Herb Jr In 1962 the family had taken up residence in Georgetown and after a year of sup ply teaching was hired The birth of minor soccer in Georgetown in the late 60s gave her first opportunity to prepare for a coaching career Ted was on one of the teams and I wash ed the shirts she quipped soon earned her soccer her with one of her more memorable experiences In sport as her im promptu debut as one of the areas first female officials sparked some controversy I had come to the field to watch Herb play when the Burlington bantam rep team showed up she recounted However there was no referee Kewley was convinced by local supporters to officiate and she finally agreed but not before the Burlington club had announced Its intentions to protest the match I told them If they were pro testing because I was female then I would take it to the Human Rights Commission she recalled Despite Burlingtons protestations the game was finally started with calling the shots I was a bit scared that Herb Jr might get In to a fight she said recalling the catcalls she received from some pi a yen The game almost reached full time at a tie before Georgetown took a foul In the penalty area call the offence and awarded Burl the penalty kick The visitors scored and won the match Ill however that her officiating netted some compliments In the early 70s Kewley succeeded in establishing a fledgling field hockey program at GDHS It was low key she explained Nobody knew what to do On one occasion after receiving a new batch of sticks Kewley noticed one of her budding charges was a particularly tough time mastering the use of the short wooden hooked device I knew something was wrong she laugh When I looked at the stick realized it was the only left handed stick I had ever seen Girls soccer also started at around 1974 and ran with a fair degree of turbulence until when the program was drydocked A bout with bronchitis led Kewley to take a forced leave of absence from the coaching ranks in 1979 She returned in style in demanding that the school budget for a girls soccer team It wasnt fair she explained Track and fldd was the only spring sport for girls With a approved roared back into the local high school girls soccer league with as Kewley notes two teams and one coach The juniors won Halton title in their first year back Meanwhile the subsequent demise of the field hockey club also alarmed and In 1986 the pro gram was revived No way was I going to let It go down the drain she said From two full sides In 1979 Field hockey attracts a different bunch of kids explained Kewley Theyre not the typical jock kids who go right Into basketball or volleyball right out of public school Canadian athletes find a great deal different hockey in eluding stance and the stick itself says Kewley They have to get used to being bent over all Ihe time as the stick length about 3638 Inches is not adjustable The kids find they get tired In the back and They find out they have only one side of the stick also takes some adjustment Early on we had some kids who didnt even know how to hold the stick she quipped The gome is still considered a fr inge sport at the high school level but clubs are thriving In some of Canadas larger metropolitan cen tres Its gaining a higher profile said Canada has two field hockey teams in the Olympics Thats an attraction With years experience coaching at the high school level admits she has seen alt She said one of the more welcomed changes In high school coaching over Ihe past few years has been the greater degree of involve ment ana organization lent to athletic administration Kewley sayB the officiating and the calibre of athlete and the ensuing performance has also Improved greatly in the high schools she at tributes a large part of the latter fact to more advances In training and students willingness to work on in dividual skills and fitness Among her concerns as she leaves the school coaching scene Kewley lists the direction of collegiate athletics as among the most impor tant Im a little worried about she sold There is a feel ing in some coses that clubtrained athletes have no place in the high schools there can be a bad feeling there Every kid has right to play for their high school if theyre will ing to listen to their coach Kids should not be getting hurt by these external forces The best athletes should be able to compete for their high school has collected an im pressive array of coaching laurels including the Kent Memorial Award from students of In 1965 for her outstanding extracurricular activity and assistance The highlight of her career came when she received the Olympic Award of Excellence this year as Ihe most outstanding coach In Hills That was a thrill she said But for most impor tant part of the coaching game has always been the participants When asked what shell miss most next September schools open their doors for the 1988B9 academic season doesnt hesitate Ill miss the Involvement with the kids she says Kewley has among her posses sions a soccer ball signed by all her players from the past season and a photo album assembled by the members of the field hockey That memorabilia is probably more dear to her than any trophy The Georgetown players have always been great lo work with They are the most positive and cooperative kids you could work with she said She plans to visit the school occa sionally often in a supply teacher role when needed and shell be a familiar sight on the sidelines of soccer and field hockey games Only this time it will be in the garb or spectator Meanwhile Kewley and her hus band Herb plan to take to the road during their retirement In the wake of a year coaching career Kewley leaves some simple and genuine advice for those Just breaking Into the ranks Youve got be enthusiastic she said When the kids know youre enthusiastic they get cxdtcd You can pull them through a game on en Reunion on Saturday Georgettes back together Over years of local ladles history will be remembered on Saturday during the Georgetown Horseshoe Lacrosse Leagues game Rams put together a pair of solid periods before fatting apart In the final frame as the Niagara Warriors Acton in the lost 20 minutes to claim the 1988 GHLL title wltha win We played well for the first two periods and held them lo heading into the last period said Rams veteran forward Wayne Young But they opened the floodgates in the third The onegame final capped the leagues tournamentstyle playoff at the Acton Arena last Saturday It also marked a rematch of last seasons championship trophy com the Warriors However the outcome was decidedly different in the 19B8 ver sion of the Golden final than in 1987 when Acton lopped a young Niagara squad to win the hardware After two close periods the promise of a hammer and long battle in the third stanza was not realized as Niagara turned up the tempo and Acton suddenly lost lis attack Acton led 1 after the first frame and were on the short end of a 3 score after minutes George Steve Holder and Steve Wilson scored for the Rams wllh assists going to Scott Early Wayne Young Fred Allen Bill Fox and Steve Young Marcus paced the Niagara attack with two goals and two assists and was named the War riors MVP for his efforts goal tender Steve Young who helped hold Ihe Rams in contention with minutes of superlative net mind won the MVP honors for the home Sieve played really well he kept us in there said Wayne Young He really deserved the MVP award Rums advanced to the flnnl game after taking a decision from a surprisinglytough Hamilton Wildcat team In the semi final match between he four team loops second and third place clubs Hamilton improved steadily during Ihe season sold Young Niagara meanwhile had an easy lime in their semi final encounter with last place Burlington Cougars The mercy acknowledged he price paid for taking a rash of penalties in the last frame Theyre a good fast team said Young But the penalties killed us too Rams totalled 32 penalty minutes In the game a whopping of them In their semi final game with Hamilton the Rams were led by George and Vsn Oort both scoring twice while Kevin chipped In with a single goal Steve Wilson counted two assists and Steve Young had one Both learns look 10 penalty minutes According to Wayne Young the annual tournament was a success The Rams managed to host the event off some of fait years club debts and they broke even for the season Despite the heat wave Young said conditions were favorable for lacrosse inside Ac ton Arena The floor didnt sweat he said Meanwhile Rams finished regular season in second place with a record or seven wins three defeats all to Niagara and two ties far points Actons final regular season contest was held last Thurs day in Acton where the Rams dumped Hamilton Fred Allen had a hattrick while singles went to Kevin Marcoux Paul Wilson Rick Newman Henny Van Oort Scott Early and Sieve Holder 1994 World Cup should help nourish soccers colonial grassroots Pauls call the World Cup help stimulate the growth of soccer in America Answer Maybe Unfortunately for he North American Soccer League the US World Cup hosting announcement came about five years too late For he Indoor Soccer League the announcement may still be too late You remember the NASL dont you It was thai wonderful league that gave us such Interesting teams as the San Jose Earthquakes Washington Diplomats shortened appropriately for a club based in the US capital to Dips and the Toronto Metros Croatia During the 1970s soccer was predicted as the new boom sport for the United States People who would today be called Yuppies flocked to the gome and registered their 1 children In minor soccer programs from Marine Del Ray California to Bridgeport Connecticut Soccer became the definitive suburban The NASL did provide some great moments The New York Cosmos who dropped the New York from their title and became simply and rather mythically The Cosmos were the star studded flagship of the struggling league They gave North American fans the great the Methuselah of sport Watching him perform well Into his lei us dream of what hockey may have been like In the if Bob by knees had held Unfortunately or fortunately depending on whether you are a a soccer fan a soccer purist la nice way of saying snob or an NFL fanatic the died And before any team could lop the San Jose Earthquakes for most unique location and name game Is floundering Teams are los ing money fans arc staying away and owners arc folding up shop Sound familiar Whether In fad US hosting or the World Cup will help save the M1SL or not may soon be a moot point The San Diego Sockets can probably lose a lot money before 1994 rolls around Now there talk of reviving Ihe dormant NASL once World Cup fever catches on in the slates Pro soccer a lough sell in North America The game Just doesnt seem to appeal to Ihe colonists at lhat level Were too frightened by the nightmarish memories of occa sional glimpses of televised Euro pean games A CM He GHHH North Americans like to hit things Soccerjust doesnt compare with the sight of a 260pound behemoth crushing a 190pound quarterback forsatisfyingploneerbloodlust Soccer is also lough to sell on TV Its hard lo find an opportunity to get up and grab a beer and leave the game on But perhaps Americans are going at it all wrong If the game on flourish at amateur level why not leave it alone Its an enjoyable game Its a great way to get fit and it a lifetime sport Perhaps Canadian Soccer League has the right idea When that fledgling loop was bom It was as an opportunity for Caoa- soccer talent to develop at a high level One of the reasons for mat goal was so we could compete at the World Cup level The US World Cup will be a fan tastic event will also provide a all of North
