Things I learned Explosive hitting in Tball playoffs Part II of The for the sun There it is Balsam Lake Were here we rereallyhere Back in the 1950 when our family arrived for our annual summer vacation a I my grandfathers cot tage I could hardly wait to renew acquaintances with my grand parents and with a certain old friend that occupied a little chunk of Balsam Lakes shoreline But first there was always the business end of things to tidy up things like that mandatory kiss for my grandmother No no mandatory Is too harsh a word I truly loved my grandmother who was a fine French Canadian lady Its Jus that I never liked lo kiss anypne much although as In all young boys this stance softened in later years And besides no one could better prepare a catch of fresh fish for dinner fare Yep I always opted to stay on Grandmas good side and give her that kiss because I always planned to catch lots of fish for her to cook My old friend along the shoreline would have lo wait a few more minutes Tie got to get my fishing rod got to hurry Grandpa Well everyone knew him as Poppy and no one ever com manded more respect from a fami ly I believe that I Inherited that abhorrence for smooching from him I never saw him kiss anyone or anything but there was sentiment there all tight he Just expressed It differently thats all and he understood more than anyone how excited 1 was to go down lo sec my old again Grandpa would usually be relax ing at the front of the cottage and as I raced down toward the lake I would slow down step I ap proached him mustnt too anxious even a six yearold had to appear cool you know Hi Grandpa He would nod Is the fishing good this year He would nod again and smile and that golden tooth filling would glisten the sunshine and he would puff slowly on his everpresent cigarette he would point the way silently encouragingly toward my old friend a friend that spoke even less than my grandfather for this friend was fashioned from dy wooden planks and strong logs and it extended thirty feel into the sparkling Balsam water Yes our old dock was always a reassuring sight for me and yes I considered It to be a friend was forever afraid that they would change it somehow remove some of those ancient car tires thai provided a cushioned landing for our boats and harboured some or the biggest spiders one could Imagine or perhaps they would fix that familiar creak the board from the end To do anything to our old dock would possibly serve to take away some if its mystical power and believe me it was truly magical spot Thankfully Grandpa liked the old dock just the way it was so thankful ly thats the way it remained over the years I learned a lot from Ihnt dock my old fnend I learned that you didnt need a boa l or lots of fancy equipment to catch fish especially those VORACIOUS bass that lived around the wooden structure My first fishing rod after all was a shaft of bamboo onto which was stapled a coarse line and at the end of the line was my lure a tiny bluegreen fuz zy feather fashioned In the form of a fly Now Ive yet to see a fly In real life but the small mouth bass and rock bass thai passed by didnt seem to care too much they attacked that little gnat with great gusto and when I hooked a fish I would work as fast as my hands would allow twirling line around the bamboo lip in order to withdraw fish from the water I would hold up catch for all to see then udly I would release it back Into the Yes and after a few painful jabs I one hand working from the head of the fish pressing down firmly on the dorsal fin I certainly didnt know the technical name for these prickly little spines I only knew that they hurl If you held the fish Incorrectly I learned to be patient that there would be times during the day when nothing was happening and then suddenly a huge school of bass would move In and I would wish that rules and economics could allow me to have a hundred bamboo poles work ing at once I learned to cheer for dull over cast days with light drizzle a slight ripple on the water Winds from the west meant fishing was best winds from he cast well you know fishing was least A special time was when a full moon and the early or late day sun oc cupied the sky at Ihe same lime And I hated those clear calm dry days that the swimmers and water skiers loved so much I felt surprise and yes a little fear when a swam by my little bait one dny Always expect the unexpected as they say And after I graduated to my first reel and rod I gradually realized the Importance of using lighter line and smaller hooks for bigger fish There was one day though that I remember better than the rest because on this day was to meet Lady Luck It began as one of those dreaded clear calm mornings and the sun appeared as a brilliant orange ball on ihe Balsam horizon The water was like a smooth gleaming tablet op Beautiful I thought But probably rotten for fishing and while I was preparing lure I hap pened lo look up About fifty yards from the end of our dock a big big bass had the audacity to break the morning silence Swoosh as tore through be glassy water face Crash back Into the water and gone What what was he after I asked a little shaken and the only answer I could muster was staring back at me that orange ball on the quiet horizon Thats what he must have wanted Surely a simple bug on the water or a minnow couldnt be responsible for such a display such a great leap I set my equipment down on my old fnend the dock and carefully marked the spot where the ripples were now shrinking away 1 headed back to the cottage where everyone else was or pretended to be sleep ing I would have to be patient because I would need some help now I couldnt cast that far and I wanted that fish 1 wanted the bass that had jumped ON THE HORIZON The Conclusion of The Bass That Jumped for The Sun SHORELINES The Toronto Star Great Salmon Hunt runs until Sept and you know every year people lose on beautiful prizes because they or so
