located In the former Room of the convent has been outfitted and designed to provide Individual pro- grama for clients moat of them faring from Alzheimers disease It services an area Including Georgetown Burlington Oakvllle Milton and Acton While the clients are bused In from across the region to enjoy a days outing In a homelike setting their caregivers are able to have a day off Currently the centre serving a total of clients two days each week Bui an annual com mitment from the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services will soon allow the centre to expand Its services to approximately clients live days of the week The official opening of this new VON Seniors Day Program will take place at the Oakvllle facility Friday Sept Officiating will be Donna Roe Executive Director of VON for Canada along with national presi dent James The centre which Is decorated with soft pastels and carefully selected furnishings provides recreation and therapeutic pro grams under the direction of pro gram Cathie Sacco Clients are bused to the centre In a customized van donated by the BurlingtonAldershot Lions Club Clients take part In programs geared to individual needs Recrea tion and exercise are emphasized along with crafts and memory games All activities such as simple meal preparation cleanup sod gardening are modelled after the tivitlesof home life Ms works with an assistant a recreation therapist and a van driver They are assisted by volunteers scheduled to take a train ing program to help then work with pa 11 en Is with special A donation of from the Rotary Cub of made II possible to furnish the centre with top new appliances and furniture The kitchen houses a microwave- convection oven freezer and When you want the best for your home inside or out these professionals can get those home improvements headed the right way dishwasher The living room has a large television and VCR and Is fur nished with comfortable pastel There Is a small quiet area and a folding bed for quick naps The bathroom has been outfitted with pedal appliances and Is color keyed so wont mistake It for some other part of BOO square foot complex At the back of the centre a large wood deck has comfortable benches The large garden with its tall fir trees a long vinyl umbrella table with matching pillowed chairs There is even a barbecue The entire effect is one of homlness and peace which the goal of project coordinator Merrill Cartnlchael who oversaw construc tion of the facility in the convent The opening of the centre culminates months of planning by the Branch of the VON A grant from Trillium Foundation of the Ontario Lottery Corporation allowed the project to begin last spring Trillium Founda tion funding will decrease as provin cial funding takes over during next two years Generous contributions from local service clubs Including the BurUnslonAldershot Lions and the Rotary Club as previously mentioned have also helped cen tre become a reality The Oakvllle Zonta Club gave for kit Ihe OakvuleTrafalgar Rotary Club gave Tor the wood deck the Kiwanls Club of Oakvllle donated a library resource package the Ladles Auxiliary of he Royal Canadian Legion gave the Legions genera membership donated and the dub of OakvUle Trafalgar donated According to program co ordinator Sacco the centres main goal Is to delay placing clients in In stitutions and to provide respite op portunities for the caregivers Pa tients accepted Into the program are all mobile They must currently live at home and immediate family must be a resident of the Region of The VON Seniors
