Home Newspaper of Halton Hills Established 1866 A Division of Canadian Newspapers Company Limited Guelph Street Georgetown L7G Ontario DAVID A BEATT1E Publisher and General MIKE TURNER Editor Phone 877 DAN TAYLOR Advertising Manager THE HERALD Wednesday O HOLY NIGHT Give it a thought When we re sitting down to our turkey dinners this Sun day and all is aglow with the Christmas spirit perhaps a few moments of reflection would be in order For while most of us are ever improving our standard of living there is a world wide problem that continues to rage In its annual report has stated that 14 million children continue to die each year from common illnesses and undernutrition This Christmas there seem to be as much tion being paid to the plight of Third World countries Rock performers aren t scheduled to release any records to help aid the cause against world hunger It t so long ago the British started a chain reaction when they released Do They Know It s Christmas a song performed by the big names of rock That started more of us thinking about what the people of Third World countries face and incited others to take up the cause But no music this Christmas Merely the stark reality of facts laid down in a report by UNICEF The entire report lays out devastating details of how each day children die It s difficult to set aside the revelry of the season to think about such depressing matters But that doesn t mean we shouldn t Relief efforts continue to accomplish what they can but there are only so many ways a global problem of such magnitude can be addressed This Christmas take a little time to remember those who are so easily forgotten and keep the Christmas spirit in mind by giving to help the effort Living on the edge Editors Notebook Most people ore caught up In their Christmas shopping right about now except of course Tor those smug in dividuals who bought when was hot These people recognize Whenever lions they are In a quandry as to what get for so the person who has already done his Christmas shopping tosses In a few more to add to the confusion of the already confused poor soul than else there that smile Its so cold and cruel it makes Freddie Kroger grin look like it s coming from a boy scout Naturally I ve never been one of these people I happen to thrive on the uncertainty and pressure of shopping at the last minute It a few hours before the stores are set to dose on Christmas Eve that you see the real shoppers These are people who can obviously perform under That right I like to live on the But believe me there another good reason for leaving the shopping to the last minute For one thing some storekeepers see fit to close a tad early on Christmas Eve And this is certainly a privilege due them I guess its not hard to figure out I once worked In the retail trade 1 So when a few of these shops start to close it naturally means that there are fewer places at which to buy presents you spotted something a few weeks ago and are still not sure on if you should buy a locked door is a neck of a way to help you make up your mind The other obvious advantage to buying late Is that the selection is considerably diminished Instead of having to narrow it down to three or maybe four different Items you may arrive at the store to find there on ly one suitable Item left on the shelf Talk about Christmas shopping made easy I You may not end up with your first selection or even your second or fourth selection But shoulders So don despair ye of the late shopping habita There may be only a few days lefl until Christmas But as the time grows short the challenge grows Lions say thanks Dear sir Please allow us to thank all those who participated In and helped us to organize this year s Santa Parade We will acknowledge all the Santa Claus Parade Committee Antismoking legislation still hazy There is considerable skepticism here about how effective the Liberals new smoking lion will prove to be Labor Minister Greg Sorbara a bill will require at least per cent of most workplaces under provincial jurisdiction to be per cent smoke- About per cent of the provincial workforce or million people will theoretically be covered However what worries the critics Is that it will not require separate ventilation nor physical barriers between the smoking and smoking areas Nor will It apply to public service areas such as bars Progressive Conservative Norm Sterling who the provincial poiltl cian with the highest profile In the unit smoking battle something acknowledged even by Ihe other par tics in the legislature says he has concerns about how practical It is and whether it can be enforced As he points out under certain conditions and because at the way the law Is worded a smoker in an of lice amid end up next to a Queens Park Derek Nelson Thorn Km Srie Interestingly however no one really took issue with Sorbara an Even Sterling con the minister for going in right direction NDP Leader Bob Hue said simply thai tobacco is a killer There are lota of euphemisms we can use to talk about this subject but there is no use in beating around the bush any more We know that tobacco causes diseases which kill people and we also know it is an addiction which affects literally millions of The question an observer has to ask then is why is the still legal The answer Is fear fear that ban ning Its use would drive It underground and make it as live a forbidden substance as co caine or marijuana Is today Instead the way to deal with tobacco is to squeeze it Into tion At least that is what its op ponents argue bill Is part of that policy So too arc taxes The Tobacco Tax Amendment Act which was announced in Treasurer Bob Nixon spring budget is also going through the legislature right now It retroactive ly bumps tobacco taxes and will in an additional million to government coffers But as Sterling sees it the point Is that prior to the Liberal takeover in 1965 Ontario had the se cond highest tuba ceo taxes In the country Today they are second There is a very good argument that the level of taxation has a very direct effect on the consumption of tobacco he sold VJE MAY BE REOUCEP TO LIVING IN OUR CAR BUT AT
