per cent of the vote He defeated challenger Sheldon votes to 44M in what many thought would be a much closer race Mayor Miller who laid he had the support of nine of the aald bis honesty and per helped Mm fend off the challenger vomers returned him to office with web a wide margin of victory Mayor Miller Mid Because Im honest People trust me Ive never ol any body down the dra In Mayor Miller said he had never changed from when be working in the paper mill to when he was mayor But the campaign waa soured somewhat by some of Councillor Sheldons remarks which the Mayor said hurt him MacLeod Donna Herald Staff In what proved to be a surprise for many Progressive Conservative Garth Turner his op position to become Peel first Member of Parliament In Mon day a federal election Mr Turners victory was never in doubt as he collected per cent of the decided vote In Peel With a total of votes Mr Turner easily defeated challengers Liberal Pierre Klein with 16 New Democrat Fern Wolf with and Libertarian George Mr Turner was declared the vie tor less than an hour after the polls closed and a short time later of had projected a PC majority government much to he delight of the crowd that gathered at the North Golf and Country Club for a victory celebration The Progressive Conservatives swept back Into power with a smaller but still solid majority The PCs took 170 seats across the nation white the Liberals irpped their total to si seals and the New Democratic Party took seats For Mr Turner Monday victory was truly a humbling experience The run for the seat was highlyintense and
