Appeals Board In a 24page decision released yesterday the Boards deci sion supported the action taken by the Georgetown Hospital Board on April to revoke the pnvileges of the gynecologist and obstetrician It la our finding based upon the evidence that Fords knowledge In both the areas of obstetrics and gynecology Is outdated the Board wrote His presence at the Georgetown and District Memorial Hospital poses a significant threat to the com munity served by that hospital and cannot continue until he can demonstrate a significant upgrading in both tux knowledge and practice Fords lawyer Gavin MacKen- argued during the bearings that Ford was never made aware of concerns about hut practice But the Board said Had we found that Ford truly not aware of the problems of his prac tice we might have seriously con sidered some form of training while his privileges continued However we have found that be was well aware of serious doubts expressed by bis peers and by toe Chief of Staff of bis hospital and that be took no steps to alter his practice or to upgrade himself In light of these warnings The Board concluded that there it a serious gap in Fords knowledge of modern medical and management in the areas of surgical a obstetrics The Appeals Board found pro blems in five areas of Fords practice Dr Ford extensive use of dllalage and curettage ID and C operations for disfunctions uterine bleeding was common during bis training but has been found almost totally discredited urrnodern Canadian gynecological circles His use of tubal repairs and tlllty operations without the use of a microscope again demonstrate a technique which baa been discredited Fords tendency to perform hysterectomies and stress in continence procedures without In vestigating to see If medical management of the problem was possible again reflects a school of gynecological thinking which is now outdated the Board wrote The doctors failure to prepare for a section also came under criticism from the Board Hla readiness perform such potentially dangerous procedures as midforceps deliveries and vaginal birth after Caesarean without adequate preparation for emergency Caesarean sections reveals an Inadequate appreciation of the possible consequences of his actions The final area Fords use of mid in deliveries alio represents an older school of obstetrics which has now largely been replaced by a more conser vative philosophy the Board said Throughout the decision the Board Fords approach was ex iremely aggressive surgically and the documentation for surgical In in
