THE HERALD OUTLOOK Saturday February IMS- Page Sports Latest Hogtown NFL bid much ado about nothing Good evening fans and welcome to the SkyDome Tonights Monday Night Football telecast features the Toronto Towers and the AFCleading falo Bills in a matchup between two fierce geographical rivals Sound crazy Yes At least for now it does But theres a group of would be promoters in who would dearly love to hear Faultless Frank Gifford deliver those words sometime in the near future An NFL expansion team in Toronto Sure sure Weve heard it all before But there it was all over agam last week Someone talking about persuading Pete to bring his pigskin up north for the good people of Toronto Only this time a group headed up by the Toronto Suns Paul Godfrey and supposedly backed by suds money from Carting OKeefe was going public with an announced bid to lure an NFL ex pansion franchise to TO First of all aside from the fact that the NFL has a host of appeal U S cities to consider when it does expand somewhere in the vicinity of 1992 according to in siders the announcement was a rude slap in the face to the poor old and much maligned CFL The NFL has always maintain ed it would never invade the Great White North so long as the CFL existed and at last look while the vital signs were weak the Canadian loop was still breathing With the myriad pioblems besetting the league these days an announcement of an NFL franchiseseeking group was all CFL cocommissioner Roy McMurtry needed to hear Its especially insulting when a major Canuck brewery is involved Call it sports treason And another thing So wheres the federal government When the late Johnny tried to bring Larry and the Toronto Northmen of the shortlived World Football League into CNE Stadium the federal Liberals immediately came to the aid of a then healthy CFL by introducing legislation to bar foreign football leagues from crashing the border Today of course with an American loving P C govern ment in office not one word would likely be said if Toronto did fluke an NFL franchise But in the end the Toronto groups bid is really nothing more than an exercise in futility owner Harry Ornest also owns the exclusive rights to foot ball at SkyDome Maybe so meone forgot to remind Carling OKeefe of that little problem Old Bill Shakespeare said it best Much ado about nothing M and Ms sweep The Georgetown M and Pro Sports Bantams werent long in disposing of Chlnguacousy in the first round of playoffs as they swept the bestof three series The local Majors hosted Ching in game one and despite outplaying by an score The M and Ms got off to a slow start with one goal in the first period and one in the second before exploding with six markers in the third The lack of scoring in the first two periods was not for lack of effort by our lads as they con tinually peppered the net with shots However the was spectacular as he continually stoned the Georgetown sharpshoots In period one Ken Kosziwka scored on a fine pass out from the corner by Mark Mcln- tyre In the second period M and Ms lone marker came from Lewis assisted by Hilts and Hagen In the big third period Sean Guistini scored the first of many M and M markers with help from and Lang scored his second of the match less than two minutes later with the assists going to Mclntyre as the flood gates opened Midway through the period Lewis scored
