Page 8 THE HERALD Wednesday February Businesses may have to adjust Business Page The last article of Chamber that worker at Molsons had The last article of Chamber Made was devoted to the employer on how to motivate employees this article is directed to employees face of the trading world is changing and Canadian business and workers will have to change to maintain our current standard of living The Free Trade Agreement with the United States the dominance of the Pacific Run countries and the impending changes in the European Common Market are all factors we cant ig In the last few weeks we have seen many businesses make big changes in the way they do business such as the mergers of Molsons and Carting OKeefe and Wardair and Canadian Airlines In As businesses ra tionalize their operations job losses are bound to occur and long term employees could fmd themselves looking for new jobs Employers have a responsibility to assist workers who are forced out of their jobs however employees must share in this responsibility to look after themselves Just last week an arti cle was written about a worker at Chamber Made who was given notice that he would be laid off The employee had years of seniority with the company and was earning per year for stacking empty beer bottles This man will never get a similar job at the same money with his limited skills While it is un fortunate that this man has lost his high paying job there is a lesson for us all that we should not be con tent with our present level of skills and we should continue to upgrade Now is the time to start adjusting to the new realities of the trading world of the 1990s Jobs that re quire little skill and pay well will be the first ones that companies will try to eliminate by using new technologies as the car companies have done or by getting out of that part of the business altogether If that worker at Molsons had upgraded his skills and education during the last 17 years he might have been able to have many other options that are not open to him now Our education system is catering more and more to the adult stu dent Now is the time to take that course which will make you a more valuable employee Many firms also offer on the job training pro grams it might mean a temporary drop in pay but in the long term you will have more money in your pay cheque Many people have a dream of being their own boss upgrading your skills and educa tion could make this dream come true The world around us is changing We must adapt our governments will not be able to protect us against the inevitable These changes will either be fun exciting and rewarding or could mear unemployment and a lower dard of living The choice is yours The Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce is here to serve
