Page 16THE HERALD OUTLOOK Saturday March 11 1989 Outlook These two Irish leprechauns are searching for a pot of gold Follow the lines to find out which one finds it Saint Patrick Saint Patrick is the guardian saint of Ireland St Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland Patrick came from a wealthy English family When Patrick was 16 years old he was captured by pirates The pirates took Patrick to Ireland and sold him into slavery It was while a slave that Patrick made the decision to devote his life to religion After six years of slavery Patrick escaped and returned home to England Patrick then joined a monastery Because of his terrible experience in Ireland Patrick returned to that country and dedicated himself to bringing Christianity to the Irish Patrick quickly gained the trust and friendship of the Irish and stayed in Ireland for the rest of his life During that time it is said that he converted more than 120000 persons to Christianity There are several legends about St Patrick The legends are not supported by fact One legend claims that Ireland has no snakes because St Patrick drove them all out Another legend claims St Patrick used the threeleafed shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity The shamrock is the national symbol of Ireland The shamrock is often worn to celebrate St Patricks Day The name shamrock is the English form of the original Irish word seamrog which means threeleafed Cut out the shapes below and fit them together to form a shamrock Little Fred If I had ten oranges and gave two away how many would I have left Little Ned I dont know In my class we do arithmetic with apples Dad Well son did you do your Boy Scout good deed today Brett I sure did Five other Scouts and I got an old lady across the street Dad Thats nice But why did it take six of you Brett She didnt want to go Sue Why in the world are you burying those old light bulbs Lou I want to see if I can grow street lights Freda Whats todays date Nit I dont know Look at the date of the newspaper youre carrying Freda That wont help Its yesterdays newspaper Joe Whats orange and goes clickclick That is easy A ballpoint carrot
