HERALD Wednesday March 15 1989 I tlLS CMC First peek impressive ByLOlSFRASER Herald Special The citizens committee had its first tour of the new building the other day and were we impressed Interior designer Cathy Smale wanted us to get a feel for the place so we could choose appropriate artwork to reflect the mood of our new town hall It is a very open modern building in a beautiful woody setting with a lovely view of North Halton Golf Club The expanse of green glass you see from Maple Avenue is viewed internally from the main stairway We were surprised that the glass appears only slightly tinted from the inside Another impressive area is the circular council chambers with a very high ceiling to make it open and airy The architect Carlos Ventin has certainly designed a functional and beautiful building Cathy Smale works with this firm and is in fact an architect herself as well as an interior designer We took a trip to the Milton Town Hall earlier that day since Carlos and Cathy work ed on this project too and wanted to show us their finished work Milton possesses a very different style of building the former Court House and jail is a very old building with a modern addition but is very tastefully decorated by Cathy The palette of colors for our building is a very soft green with pinkishbeige walls a very uptodate color scheme but very peaceful and compatible with the woody surroundings The Civic Centre Donations Committee is hoping to add some historical photographs reflecting the roots of the Town of Hills which incorporated the towns of Georgetown Acton and Esquesing Township in 1974 We have also been contacted by individuals and organizations who would like to donate prints or paintings to be chosen by the committee There are lots of empty walls in our Civic Centre and we would like to fill them with tasteful and appropriate art work reflecting the spirit of our building and of our town All artwork must be approved by the donations committee with input from the in terior designer as well as the building committee which is made up of town councillors If you have any suggestions or donations we would like to hear from you Call Fred Helson at or Gary Brand for details 3 Board favors government paper Crazy boats to set sail The Lions Club of Georgetowi has announced the 23rd annual running of the Crazy Boat Race to Thursday to accept in principle a govemment plan to tack lot levies on new homes in the Region The boards 108 vote in favor of a provincial government green paper submitted to school boards in December follows the Halton Roman Catholic School Boards approval of the same government paper The lot levy if imposed could cost home builders per home say sources Funds from the levies would be applied to costs associated with new growth in cluding the construction of schools The levies would be placed in a provincial pool of funds collected by the municipality and shared by boards This means the Catholic and public school boards in the Region should pool funds collected from developers Board of Education chairman Pat said she is concerned about the distribution of funds Presently the public board funding is per cent government- provided while the Catholic boards funding is per cent governmentfunded she said Mrs Hillhouse is also concerned that the province will cut grants allocated for education if lot levies are approved This must not be a way for the province to escape their respon sibility for renovation and restora tion she said But Burlington Trustee Ann Bar- had harsher words for the government legislation It lets the province off the hook now is the time to object to the whole thing she said Burlington Trustee David Coons said North Halton would feel the impact of lot levy funding because growth is more rapid in south Halton in areas like Oakville and Burlington He said if the govern ment legislation on lot levies is passed it would divide the Region We have to live as one com munity he said not as in dividual sections Oakville Trustee Janis said she could not support the TOWN OF HILLS MAIN ST SOUTH HALTON HILLS GEORGETOWN 8775185 NOTICE All said saying that the school boards have little choice but to approve I want to see the black and white of this Halton Hills Trustees Arlene Bruce Acton and Dick Howitt Georgetown voted to support lot levies The lot levy is not going to create an undue hardship said Trustee Bruce Taxpayers have paid their bit and do suffer an addi tional burden when you have development Trustee said he supports the government green paper Philosophically I agree with the concept of lot levies he said The boards main contention with lot levies on new home builders is that funding for repairs on present schools wouldnt arrive Trustee Coons said the board needs additional bricks and mortar for new schools but feared how money coming from a Regional pool might be distributed Amendments to the approval of the green paper were proposed by board trustees These amend ments said the trustees supported the principle of lot levies but wanted to see how the plan would be implemented DENTURE THERAPY CLINIC TRENTON
