THE HERALD OUTLOOK Saturday Mnrth 1989 MP takes exception to editorial implications On The Hill With Garth Turner More taxes anyone Are you kidding Nobody wants to pay more But that was the headline the Bolton Enterprise used last week on an editorial which talked about me The last election residents of elected a man who they believed was a champion of their cause the paper said so meone who had the backbone to stand up to his own party and change the system to help the lit tie guy or go down fighting But the fire is gone now Our fearless champion has fallen back from his stance He now tows the party line like a good little camper These words came a week after I told you Id written a guide to that proposed national sales tax the finance minister wants to put into place in a couple of years In that guide I explained how I went from being a skeptic about the tax to a supporter of it as long as it ac compUshed some goals like being fairer than the system is now like reducing income taxes and like helping to smash the deficit Somewhere along the way I guess this got interpreted as meaning Garth Turner was now an apologist for the feds Well Ive only been a politician for about four months so maybe this is a good time this little camper made his mark in the there Instead I will learn all I can and then tell you straight Ill ask for your input and years before it becomes law I will tell Michael Wilson what you told me No crisis management at the last minute when people awake un prepared to find taxes changed or the government cutting back on spending to reduce the deficit Im not going to hide from the storm then come up with some cute mick when it comes time for re election I do care about the average peo ple who elected me I care so much that all my energies in Ottawa will be devoted to ensuring the middle class endures and prospers and is filled with incentive We can have that however if First let me tell you I dont mind the criticism For weeks Ive been crisscrossing the riding asking for input and feedback and comment Good or bad I need this to do the job of representing you in Ottawa Besides as a former newspaper columnist I flung more than a lit tie mud in the past Now its my turn to get muddied myself I decided to get into politics because I was tired of being a critic It struck me that real change could be accomplished more by working within the system rather than just yelling at It Sure Ive led protests for lower taxes Ive cried out about dans who wear down middle class taxpayers and then try to buy them back with their own money And for years Ive warned that the greatest threat to everybody are governments who fling us into debt with neither our approval nor sometimes even our knowledge Today nothings changed I have the same beliefs and the same goals I hurt for the little guy who feels like the Bolton Enter prise does that elected officials abuse him It shouldnt be that way And thats why Im on this side of the fence now as one of those of ficials I didnt get into this to be popular You might as well know now that Im not going to run away from tough or controversial issues If the feds propose a national sales tax then Im not going to staple my lips together and pretend it isnt DENTURE THERAPY CLINIC TRENTON 18 CHURCH STREET GEORGETOWN ACROSS FROM LIBRARY ANO CULTURAL CENTRE the country continues to flirt with Third Worldstyle debt if it is sad died with high interest rates as a result or with a sick dollar Unless we take action now we could be on a path to economic calamity and taxes which are not only rising but on a permanent basis You can have an MP who gives you good news and shows up in the newspaper handing out cheques Or you can have me tell you up front and honestly what comes next and why You can have the angry powerless lockedout prophet in the backbenches the loner who makes newspaper copy because he counters his own party Or you can have a guy who is working to influence the system so it can be changed So it can be more responsive responsible and humane My eye is on the goal not on my feet If I go down fighting as the newspaper suggests how will I r have done a single thing for you But I am here to serve You tell me what kind of a Member of Parliament to be Tell me to be angry or tell me to be effective I can be either but not both CRAFT SHOP 11 MAIN STREET SOUTH ACTON 8533949
