Pomeroy said last week that the Ministry infonned him energy from waste would not be included in a massive solid waste diversion program to be in place by the year 2000 The diversion program is the brainchild of the the Greater Toronto Area commission composed of five regions in eluding Halton One aim of the is to divert one million tonnes of garbage by 1992 and two million tonnes by the year 2000 The Greater Toronto Area has a total four million tonnes of solid waste to be diverted says a Regional report Energy from waste made a lot of sense as a solution said Mr Pomeroy Without energy from waste included in the plan to divert solid waste the whole GTA with its representatives from York Halton Peel Durham and Metro Toronto could fall apart he said He said Region had been treated like a child when coun cillors werent informed of the Ministry of Natural Resources stand on recycling If thats their position they should come right up front he said He added that he was disap pointed the recycling issue had to be debated again But Milton Coun Bill Johnson said the Region must find alternate solutions to recycling He cited a downtrend in the industry as the there would be no market for it he said The Region presently recycles per cent of its The GTA commission was form ed in March of this year as a reac tion to Metro Toronto garbage problem Halton Regions Chief Administrative Officer John Flem ing said Haltons involvement in the program is its ty Were the ones who have to do the disposal he said While Regional councillors agreed with finding a solution to the solid waste problem they bad thought energy from waste would be part of the long term solution Halton Hills Councillor Marilyn Serjeantson suggested the Ministry of Natural Resources come to Halton Region to explain their stand on recycling Why not have the views of the people who are already putting a damper on it before it starts she said The Region has proposed a allocation to the GTA com mittee to explore solutions to disposing of four million tonnes of garbage Regional Chairman Peter Pomeroy and Burlington Patrick McLaughlin will represent the Region at a GTA meeting this Friday in Toronto Mans wood residents fight industry A group of Manswood residents disapprove of a proposed nearby plumbing industry that would employ 265 workers The proposed square metre plumbing and manufactur ing distribution centre called Manswood Industrial Park would be located on acres of rural pro perty in southwest Halton Hills near the Milton border Residents who live near the Sideroad FiveThird Line location say the proposed industry is too large and could rob local wells of water They would like to see the town refuse a zoning change for Manswood Park It is presently a rural lot containing an abandoned house and a decrepit barn Residents attended a public meeting of Hills general committee Monday night to voice I their concerns Dave Kiddle a Manswood resi dent said he doesnt want the town I to approve the huge centre I feel its much too large it I could take a considerable amount of water to operate he said Another resident Jack Crawford was concerned that with rural land surrounding the site local farmers could be faced with waste water flowing into the creek behind the property Fanners use this creek regularly he said Jim Archdekin who also lives near the proposed plumbing site said a recent application to a a piece of land similar to the Manswood Industrial Park site was rejected Different considerations are being used for similar applica tlons said Mr Crawford But the town planners assured that a proper study would be con ducted before a ruling on the site is reached Patrick Sweet a representative of Manswood Industrial Park said the studies were done to the satisfaction of the Regional health unit He added that further water tests would be made but that the land was for dry industrial use and that the plant is really just an assembly plant But town planning director Ian Keith sided with residents on the water issue The question of sur rounding wells Is certainly a valid one he said The bylaw issue for Industrial Park will come before the Town of Halton Hills again April 17 Plan your Home Tourist month Chamber Made ByDOUGPENRICE Herald Special The Hills Chamber of Commerce undertakes projects that benefit not only the business
