representing an cent increase over last year The bottom line for taxpayers is an increase of per cent or an average more per taxpayer based on an average assessment This year taxpayers will kick in a total of The board budget was delayed in approval because of late word from the provincial governments on the boards grant The board received million in grants last year but this years grants are down million to a total million Although the grants are down trustee Peter Abbott said this is not the boards only problem I hate to say it but our spen ding is getting out of control and Were getting into realms that are out of our area Mr Abbott referred to new pro grams that will see the board pro viding psychologists and social workers for schools Georgetown and area trustee Dick Howitt was the first to speak in opposition to this years budget at a meeting Thursday night I cant support this budget I wont go into a lot of the detail but I cant support the direction of some of the initiatives were taking Some of the larger expenditures include million for classroom computers for library upgrading for special education supplies and services for additional support staff and for class size reduc tion at the Grade 1 and Grade levels Acton and area trustee Brace said this years budget is very accountable She respond ed to the criticism of social ser vices We taking a very short term if were saying we should not be spending money on social services Mrs Bruce added that to call the budget out of control is irrespon sible have trouble when hear statements like that A large slice of the budget pie goes to salaries wages and fringe benefits almost 77 per cent of the total Supplies services and utilities take up almost 13 per cent Furniture equipment transporta tion contracts debt charges and miscellaneous costs eat up the re maining per cent Board Director Bob Williams said the budget process go through does put each item under scrutiny Board Chair Pat said special services programs approv ed in for implementation this year are reviewed several times by board members It is far off the mark she said to say budget decisions are rubberstamped We have to make wise deci sions spending the money the best way we can for the good of the students Mrs Hillhouse added that budget is in line with other boards Last year Halton spent an average per student Other boards in the area ranged from an average per pupil in Metropolitan Toronto to per student inLincoln county Peel York and Hamilton- school boards all had higher perpupil costs than the Halton Board of Education last year Homes will for round three to preserve contracts signed with 93 purchasers last year The construction company recently heard from the Town of Hills that its registration date will be delayed into May The most recent extension allowed until April 28 to register its homes in south Georgetown Homes president Danny Salvatore said he will meet this Friday with the developers Enterac Property Corporation to request a third extension for the subdivision developer refuses me at this point time I would have to refund the money and terminate the deals with the purchasers said Mr Salvatore originally planned to build homes in south Georgetown Due to water pro blems construction was seriously reduced to93 homes Local resident Luba Marshall who presently lives in Georgetown but purchased a home last year asked town councillors Monday night when the registra tion would take place to speed up the building of the homes and to allow their selling price to remain the same Mrs Marshall said Jesse Scholarship Award applications are open to any student in the Halton high school system who intends to pur sue a university or college educa tion in health sciences The scholarship originated
