relay training over the week as they prepare for the annual Rebel Classic Invitational Relays at GDHS on May 2 Tough openers for Rebels It was a tough way to open the 1989 rugby season as the GDHS Rebels travelled to Oakville last Thursday to meet perennial powerhouse algar Although the results were predictable with the Red Devils making a clean sweep of the midgetjuniorsenior tripleheader GDHS coach Bill Bingham was pleased with the ef forts of his charges The seniors did quite well they played fantastic on defence and stopped a couple of penalty plays within our five yard line said Bingham of a respec table senior loss to OT On the junior side things werent quite as rosy as a larger Red Devil pack helped OT roll to a big win In midget play Trent Cull turned in a scin tillating fullfield run for one of his two tries as the Rebels lost a decision He made three tackles shook the ball loose and ran 60 yards for one of his tries said Bingham Meanwhile Rebels used an ex hibition tripleheader with Assumption Crusaders on Mon day at GDHS to help work on some of the lessons learned In and the results were very encouraging Scrumhalf Wade Serjeantson and Brent Presswood playing his first rugby this season each scored a pair of tries as the seniors trashed the Cm by a count Hooker Andrew Macken zie added one Rebel try and fullback Trevor was a commendable in the convert department He played well said Bingham The junior also won earn ing a 128 victory while the midgets worked hard and made it close in a 90 loss with Assump tion scoring points late in the con frontation Rebels host Acton juniors tomorrow and Assumption midgets also on Thursday get their kicks Brad Thorpe had the distinc tion of being the only Acton rugby player to score points as the AHS squads opened their 1989 Halton high school season last Thursday in Acton Thorpe kicked all of the AHS midget team points in a 129 loss to Assumption Crusaders as he made good on three penalty kicks including two booming ef forts from yards out The lead changed hands often in a spirited often roughhouse affair which saw two Acton players ejected for high tackling fouls Despite finishing the game 13 players to the were still knocking on the door at and were always in con tention with Thorpes lethal boot at the ready Meanwhile couldnt find the handle in the end zone as he dropped a potential tryscoring ball and two other Ac ton tries were called back by the referee as the junior fered a close loss to Assump tion On the senior side Acton took the heaviest loss of the day ab sorbing a 200 whitewashing from the more experienced Crusader side Making a most positive comment on a game but short- staffed Acton senior side coach Dave Boycott said his charges would rather play and lose than not play at all Redmen archrival Georgetown at GDHS today in junior action while the midgets and seniors visit the always- tough Nelson Lords tomorrow in Burlington Mayors race I on June 11 I The
