problems is vital to helping the child overcome a low level of selfesteem Those children showing signs of either hyperactivity or severe resulting from a life situation or aggressive behavior or moodiness or an inability to get RIDE on for long weekends TORONTO For the first time the Ministry of the Solicitor General in conjunction with the Ontario Provincial Police regional and municipalforces is sponsoring a cooperative RIDE program to take place on long weekends the summer The concept was initiated by a coordinated traffic management group looking at ways to solve common accident causing pro blems affecting forces throughout the province A media conference will be held Thursday May 18 at 10 a m m the auditorium at Metro Toron to Police Headquarters Col lege St to launch the program set to run from Victoria Day weekend through until Thanksgiving Day weekend along with others are some of the problems the funded centre treats The centres headquarters was founded in Hamilton in 1960 and the North Halton branch was established in There are also programs in Burlington Brantford and- Brampton Before the centre accepts a child the child s parents must be willing to participate in the ing and treatment processes Ms Scruton explained the child s emo tional problems cannot be separated from the family For example it might be a con tnbuting factor in the child behavioral problems she said But whatever the case Ms Scruton said the child has a significant feet on the family s relationship with each other Besides Ms Scruton the bran ch s staff includes a child develop ment counsellor Darlene Munden an academic coordinator Park Public School teacher Audrey Hillman and a Geoff Hall who specializes in pin pointing learning disabilities The group also uses the services of a child psychologist and a pediatrician According to Mr Thomson a child is treated an average of months During this period the cen tres staff employ a vanety of techniques including play therapy social skills training and individual and family counselling to help the child Counsellors interact with the child 24 hours a day Mr Thomson said the camps provide the counsellors an
