will be the first region in Ontario and one of the first in Canada to introduce public recycling bins called igloos These blue boxes away from home are shaped like igloos and are made of bluecolored injection- molded Regional Chair man Peter announced a plan yesterday Tuesday to distribute igloos around the Region in public places such as parks arenas shopping centres and GO stations The igloos made by German firm Stinnes Enerco Inc will be on loan to the Region for a year The igloo will make its Halton Hills debut at the Georgetown and Acton fall fairs this month The program will cost the Region about over the next year to purchase a truck for collec tion said Jake Westerhof the Regions waste reduction techni cian There wilt be multi- material igloos and the 20 dome- shaped singlematerial igloos Igloos will reduce the amount of waste deposited in landfill sites Mr Pomeroy said But Mr could not estimate how much waste would be reduced from the use of the igloos which are scheduled for distribution this fall The Ministry of the Environ ment has challenged us all with a commitment to 25 per cent waste reduction by 1992 and per cent waste reduction by the year 2000 the Regional chairman said Tues day presently recycles per cent of its waste Halton produces 200000 tonnes of waste a year which is shipped to New York State and Niagara Falls Ontario at a cost of Si million a month to taxpayers Tipping fees at landfill depots in Halton are a tonne up 30 from last year Halton recently Joined the five- region Greater Toronto Area in itiative on landfill to find perma nent sites for four million tonnes of waste a year coming from Halton York Peel and Durham Regions as well as Metropolitan Toronto blue box program in itiated Regionwide this year is successful Mr Pomeroy said We are now able to put magazines in our blue boxes and recycle card board from our homes The Region plans to recycle mix ed plastics and to add recycling service to rural areas as part of its wastediversion goals will be following in the footsteps of Peel Region which earlier this year in troduced plastic recycling Igloo containers have been us ed successfully in Europe for the recycling of glass cans and paper Mr Pomeroy said in a report to the media We feel very strongly that this program will be highly successful in Stunt drivers will highlight the fall fair Flyin back to the Acton Citizens Band local Halton Hills councillors and the Halton Hills Gymnastics Club Parade organizers say the Cana dian Tire Stunt Drivers could ar rive in time to be part of- the parade Fair organizers are excited to have return for a second year Air Fantasy and Sphere Clown Band both to perform on Sunday Also on Sunday will be the 1968 World Dou ble Dutch Champions The Lincoln from who travel coast to coast performing various displays of high speed precision driving involving deliberate crash stunts motorcy cle leaps and a balancing act that brings a truck onto two wheels The Stunt Drivers are led by 900 plus pound Paul of the Im perial Hell Drivers fame who has driven in stunt shows around the world Unlike Hollywood with the forgiving possibilities for retakes and safety cages Pauls art demands precision the first time and his success has come from 37 years of doing just that Aside from his two wheel balanc ing act Paul is responsible for in structing the team in performing their stunts Veteran rider Randy is known throughout Western Canada as a champion motocross man Randy will be seen in the show on bis roaring two- wheeler performing death defying leaps the stunt cars The star of the show is also the youngest member of the team 28- yearold Toby and join ing the Stunt Drivers this year Is Richard Rutledge from Belleville who brings with him the high speed
