Page THE HERALD Wednesday September ism Longhorns reach the top By COLIN GIBSON Herald Sports Editor It was third time lucky for peren nial bridesmaid as the green and white squad made It all the way to the alter Sunday at Georgetown high school field and claimed the Georgetown Mens Flag Football League cham pionship trophy with a decisive 3718 win over Corrigan have teen knocking on the door for so long the remov ing of splinters from knuckles was starting to become an annual post season team tradition The Horns have been in the Georgetown Mens Flag Football League for eight years and have always hovered near the top Last year Longhorns advanced to the league championship final against Dairy Queen but were edg ed by an unconverted touchdown Sunday against Corrigan Longhorns played solidly on both offence and defence while the eventual losers for reasons known only to themselves got away from their game plan far too early suf fered some defensive lapses then could do nothing as the new league champions surged Longhorns finished regular season play in first place in the leagues Division with Cor rigan finishing second eight points back Both teams boasted awesome of fences but the difference in the two teams showed up the defensive statistics Longhorns allowed 122 points against in 13 games while Cor rigan allowed points against in the same number of games Clearly defence would play a major role in the championship game Corrigan scored first on a steady Paul Allison march down the field with quarterback Pat McKlnnon employing relatively short passes effectively Longhorns came back with a ma jor on their first possession and the game seesawed through the first half ending up with Longhorns in front 1412 Cracks however were beginn ing to appear in Cwrigans game plan and it seemed that more and more the long bomb was employed with the shortpassing possession plays being ignored This same strategy scuttled Dairy Queens hopes the previous week in their semifinal playoff game against this same Corrigan team A lesson should have been learned The strong defence was able to lay back deep thus avoiding the helterskelter play in the yard zone just ahead of the line of scrimmage and this proved Corrigans undoing The teams traded touchdowns early in the second half then a 90- yard pass and run play from quarterback Mike to Wayne Doell proved to be the turn ing point in the game was content to work with yard passes and let the legs do the talking The converted touchdown put in front 2718 and that basically was the game Corrigan couldnt mount any consistent offence and intercep tions by Paul Allison and Jim Lind say put the cap on the well- deserved win Wayne scored two majors for the with Paul Allison Bob Davey and Jim Lind say also scoring touchdowns Dave Paterson kicked a field goal and added four converts For Corrigan league regular season scoring champion Brad Ferguson had two touchdowns with John rounding out the scoring LONGHORNS
