Georgetown Pontiac Buick Raiders Central Ontario Junior Hockey League West Divi sion season could not exactly be character zed as vintage Sour grapes might be more appropriate The new year is not starting out much better for the struggling team as the Raiders dropped a pair of games last weekend to remain in three starts Friday night in the Raiders suffered a setback at the hands of the hometown Blades and Sunday evening in Brampton Raiders bowed 2 to the Capitals The losses dropped the Raiders season record mark to 1 last in the West Division standings and 10 points behind sixth place Brampton Raiders didn t disgrace themselves by means in the losses but as the cliche goes Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades Oakville sits comfortably atop the West Division standings and except for a second period letdown Raiders battled the division leaders on even terms Friday evening The game was tied l after the first period but Oakville surged for three unanswered second period counters and that was the dif in the game The third period was scoreless Marty Savoy unassisted scored the lone Raider goal Curtis Green in the Raider nets was superb He made saves in both the first and third periods while the Raiders could only manage 19 shots at Oakville net minder Antom Hill Brampton was lucky to escape with the win over the Raiders but a Capitals second period shor goal proved to be the dif in the game The first period ended scoreless and Brampton enjoyed the slim 10 lead heading into the third frame The teams matched a pair of third period markers but Bramp ton was able to make the second period goal stand up for the win Bill McDonald converted a pass from John Williamson for the first Raider goal while Rob off feeds from Brent and Chris Lazarowff as befits a man whose devotion to and love of the game of hockey through seven decades was never clouded by any misperception of his own self worth Roy Ward a lifelong resident of Georgetown has been named the 1990 recipient of the Georgetown Hockey Hentage Council Award I m pleased with the award said Mr Ward Don get me wrong It s just tint I ve never been comfortable in the limelight The game of hockey has always been a part of my life and m in volvement always seemed natural I didn expect to be rewarded for it In fact his grown children David Paul and Mary Jane Mur ray convinced Mr Ward that he was a worthy recipient of the 1990 award and should the honor as part of his own hockey t going to accept the award at first pointed out Mr Ward but the family got onto me and I realized it the award meant a lot to all of us A widower of three years the 77 yearold Ward can remember a winter when hockey wasn an in tegral part of his life His playing career spanned nearly years and included the natural initiation into the game by way of minor hockey through In termed ate hockey ranks and con eluding in in the Georgetown Industrial Hockey League He gravitated naturally to other aspects of the game including refereeingand coaching I gave up refereeing he chuckled when my oldest boy David complained that the kids he played with would think I was favoring him His involvement with the game continued as he took on other roles He became involved in volunteer work for hockey and in the 1970s and 80s was an executive member for the highly successful In termediate A Raiders Hardy Cup champions in Roy Ward along with Joe Hall Dave Keptner Ted King Garfield McGilvray and Ken McMillan comprised the Original who formed the Georgetown Hockey Heritage Council in 1978 Roy Ward is still a part of that council one of the reasons he was reluctant to accept this year award Georgetown Hockey Heritage Council Chairman Dave Kentner spoke highly of Mr Ward The community of Georgetown and all those who have enjoyed the benefit of Roy s ef forts join with the Georgetown Hockey Heritage Council in saluting a worthy recipient Mr Roy Ward Not surprisingly Mr Ward could no come up with any in dividual highlights that stood out in his involvement with hockev the years Rather it was the ex penence and enjoyment of the game as a whole that he cherishes most I remember running home from school to get the skates on Even when I was older I would still run home from work to get tht skates on and get in some hockev with my friends The with learns from Ac ton does however stand out in Ro I used to love those games against Acton he recalled with a laugh They could get pretty rough at times but to me that was what hockey was all about ing and the friendship of your teammates sure helped to ease the soreness Hockey is a great game Basketball tourney scheduled Georgetown District High School will be the scene Friday and Satur day of an eight team invitational junior basketball tournament to hear Sixteen teams including entries from Georgetown and Acton com peted in the six da event that saw a Hilton Region team Milton skate with tournament championship honors after defeating Sudbury 1 in the Cham Final Hume pointed out that the tour nament could not have gone off so smoothlv without the dedication of a number of behind the scenes workers Working hand in hand with Hume on the tournament commit tee were Tony Finn Dave Martin Kai en Hume Lorraine and Rick Buick Vicki and George Ballentme Judy and Wayne Pries Roger Bob Scott Jeff Hannah Charlie Han Green Wayne Dixon Keith Bennett Norm Lockhurst and Tom Lush As proof of the increasing regard with which the tournament is held by knowledgeable hockey people the players are attracting more and more attention from Ontario Hockey League scouts Three OHL scouts were spotted lurking behind the pillars at this year s tournament Scott Ferguson of the OHL s Cen Scouting Bureau was in atten dance as was Tim Lenko of Niagara Falls Thunder and Norm Bryan representing Peterborough Petes I m not here to scout any one particular player pointed out Lenko but quality teams do par ticipate some from smaller cen Ires and we like to get looks at as many midget aged players as possible Ail in all an excellent week of midget hockey at Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena and kudos are due all those who helped to make the tournament such a success CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND MILTON Following on the heels of a relatively win over Acton in Preliminary Round Milton rallied for a hard fought gut check time win over Mississauga to advance to Third
