old axiom Save the best for last as regular season play winds down in the West Division of the Central Ontario Junior B Hockey League and playoffs fast approach The Raiders topped Peter borough Junior Petes 76 in a nasty game Friday evening at Gordon Memorial Arena then held on to gain a 55 tie with the West Division third place Burlington Cougars in another home en counter Saturday evening at Got don Alcott Memorial Arena The win and a tie lifted the Raiders season record to not nearly good enough to escape the leagues West Division cellar but more than good enough to salvage Raiders which has had a rough go of It this past season With playoffs just over the horizon the Raiders have elevated their game a notch or two and have four points to show for their last four outings two ties and a win If the Raiders continue to upgrade their efforts the team could be the surprise of post season play as all teams in the tral Ontario Junior B Hockey League gain entry into the playoffs Curtis Green once more took centre stage in the win over Peter borough as he was forced to make saves as opposed to only snags for his counterpart in the Peterborough nets Jamie His efforts might have gone for naught had John Williamson not converted passes from Kevin Brown and newcomer Andre Gregoire with less than three minutes remaining in the game for what proved to be the game winning goal Williamson s goal his second of the night capped a scrappy gutsy effort by the Raiders who deserved the two points if only because of their never saydie attitude Chris Lazarowff had a pair of goals and an assist for the Raiders while singles went to Marty Savoy team scoring leader Brent Presswood and hard working An Gregoire Kevin Brown had a pair of Burlington waltzed into Georgetown Saturday evening a full 29 points ahead of the Raiders in the league s West Division stan dings The Cougars left with a bit more respect for the Georgetown squad The Raiders tightened up sively somewhat against Burl ington and Curtis Green was only called upon to make 33 saves while the Raiders directed drives at Burlington netminder David Smenglio Raiders enjoyed a 2 1 first period advantage and headed into third period play with a less than com lead Burlington managed to outscore the Raiders 2 over the final 20 minutes but the play of Green combined with strong defensive play in their own end salvaged the tie for the Raiders Chris Lazarowff was a force to be contended with all game as he scored twice and added a pair of assists Single Raider goals went to Mar Savoy Steve and Brent With only seven games remain ing in the regular season Raiders will have ample opportunity to finetune leading up to playoff ac tion The Raiders journey to Burl Friday evening return engagement with the regular season Sunny Acres trounced Ancaster Saturday afternoon defeated Streetsville 31 Sunday evening and closed out regular season play Monday evening with a over Brampton The weekend wins ran the team s current winning streak to five games and locked up first place in the Hockey League Midget AA Division two points in front of arch rival Milton Sunny Acres finished regular season play with a 2231 record a harbinger of hoped for playoff suc cess and possible provincial honors The game against played Saturday afternoon at Go- don Alcott Memorial Arena was a rough and tumble affair that saw four players from each team toss ed for fighting Mark Rich Bond Craig Cooper and Mark Lonto were given the gate for Sunny Acres while Jason Holts Jason Van Den Heuvel Ray and Jason MacLean got the
