THE Rebel swimmers making waves By COLIN GIBSON Herald Sports Editor The Georgetown District High School Rebels swim team is mak ing waves in preparation for the upcoming season of champion ships Friday at the Georgetown Indoor Pool the Rebels swept over White Oaks High School of Oakville 375210 in a dual meet and the win came hard on the heels of a meet triumph the previous Wednesday that saw GDHS out distance Acton and Loyola high schools swim teams Weve won four out of five league meets are undefeated at home and making great progress noted head coach Shirleen Vella The swimmers times have been dropping continually and the in dividual efforts have been ail a coach could ask for Vella said While the team effort as a whole Friday was impressive several individuals rated special mention Glen won the senior boys metre freestyle event the senior boys 100 metre backstroke and with teammates Brett Glllett Michael and Dave captured the senior boys 200 metre medley relay Kristjana Curry won the senior girls 100 metre freestyle event the senior girls 50 metre butterfly event and was a member of the winning senior girls 200 metre freestyle event team Other team members included Williams Jenn Ryan and Glaser Jenni Williams won the senior girls metre individual medley event and was second in the senior girls 50 metre butterfly event Coach Vella also had praise for William Fry Grant Goodfellow John Manning and Trevor Charles who make up the junior boys swim team She noted their times have been impressive and improving regularly The Halton championships are scheduled for Feb 7 at Etobicokes Olympium The Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference championships are scheduled for Feb 14 while the On tano championships are slated for March and 3 To qualify for the OFSAA cham swimmers must meet certain standards which makes it doubly important for swimmers to improve and peak at the most opportune time Rebel strikers suffer loss By COLIN GIBSON Herald Sports Editor The Georgetown District High School Rebels senior girls volleyball team took a tumble out of first place in Halton Eastern Division standings as the GDHS squad came out flat and lost to Oakvilles Loyola High School 21 in the three match played last Tuesday Jan in The Rebels rebounded with a vengeance in a home match last Thursday against T A High School drubbing the visitors 30 in the three match However the damage had already been done in the loss to Loyola and the Rebels relinquished first place in the East to OakvilleTrafalgar High School The Rebels season record stands at while OTHS boasts an unblemished mark The match against Loyola is best forgotten understated Rebel coach Bevin Clark We had just come away from a tough tourna ment the Brebeuf High School of Hamilton tournament where the Rebels fmished fourth overall in a very strong eight team field simp ly put we came up flat against Loyola a team we should have beaten easily Clark even shouldered some of the blame for the loss get the winning goal to set the score at Georgetown 5 Stoney Creek 6 I thought we could at least hold the tie when Matt Downs scored at 1 said coach John Wright but it wasnt to be We got too cocky and were willing to sit on a twogoal lead while Stoney wasnt giving up Dumb penalties and a fluky last second goal put a damper on what still is a fine end of season showing We only lost two of our last
