BEST AVAILABLE COPY ANNIVERSARY Wednesday January 1 Page Feeling the pinch Lobsterfest held In June at the Georgetown District High School cafeteria has become the most popular annual event held by the Klwanis Club began as an internal dinner but It has grown to a dinner which about people Here Dave Ash shows us tandem lobsters while Terry and Bud Cooke give the lobsters some of their own medicine Herald photos ducks will navigate Credit River prizes include a car Caribbean cruise The Georgetown Kjwanis Club is not a group which ducks a challenge And it s along those lines ducks that the group is uig a event that should eclipse its annual Lobsterfest as the service clubs biggest fundraislng event of the year On Saturday April at exact ly 1 p m a giant dump truck will pull up to the Credit River behind Club 2000 the driver will pull back on the lever and 50000 little yellow plastic ducks will begin a 1 7 mile journey down the river to Eldorado Park in Brampton The Georgetown Kiwanis Club is teaming up with members of the Brampton Kiwanis and Flower City in Bramp ton for what it hopes will be an annual event The Kiwanis Club is selling each duck for Each plastic fowl will carry with it a number The person who holds the number of the first duck to cross the finish line wins first prize There are prizes in all total ing The three area Kiwanis Clubs got the idea from their counter parts in Ottawa says Georgetown Kiwanis Club dent John Schaljo The Kiwanis Club in Ottawa has held such a race down the Rideau Canal for the past three years and it s been extremely profitable for them says Mr Schaljo In fact the Ottawa Kiwanis have had to up their duck count from to 75 in what has turned into a festival Mr Schaljo adds While Mr Schaljo is not sure if all 50 ducks will get sold in the first race hes getting help from other groups in town selling tickets The Georgetown Hospital Ladies Auxiliary is selling tickets for the big race and Georgetown Minor Hockey will soon be selling tickets for the Kiwanis Club First prize is a Pontiac valued at second prize is a Caribbean Cruise for four people and third pnze is a fishing boat motor and trailer valued at Other prizes include a trip to Walt Disney World in Florida for a family of four peo ple NHL Stanley Cup tickets in cluding airfare hotel and cash for two games valued at a shopping spree at the Olde Hide House in Acton valued at a 12 horsepower lawn tractor valued at just under a mobile cellular telephone valued at 750 a Webber Genmsis barbecue valued at an mountain bicycle The groups who are supplying the prizes have supported the Kiwanis by selling the prizes at cost or in some cases they have been donated said Mr Schaljo Kiwanis members raise over 15000 a year When the Georgetown Kiwanis Club holds a special fundraislng event in town there is a host of people and organizations who will benefit Georgetown Club members raise between 15000 and 20000 in town each year Their biggest event of the year is the annual Lobsterfest held in early June The event started off seven years ago as an internal club affair but it has since mushroomed to a festival which serves about 500 people at the Georgetown District High School cafeteria says John Schaljo president of the Georgetown Kiwanis But there have been a variety of other successful Kiwanis Club events which have raised money over the years Curling bonspiels baseball tournaments car ralleys dances snow ball tour naments and walkathons have all contributed to the ef fort of the Kiwanis Club over the years And the money has been donated to some very worthy causes in town The Kiwanis Club purchased a computer to assist victims of Downs Syndrome to speak and learn ARC Industries is another organization in town which has benefitted from the fruits of the Kiwanis Clubs labor ARC In dustries is a group which assists developmental handicapped people get back into the workforce ARC Industries operates a store in Hornby Its members make various crafts and sell them at the store Other organizations who have received help from the Kiwanis Club include the North Association for tally Handicapped North Halton Womens Place the North Hospice the United Way which has agencies under its um brella the Georgetown Skating Club and the Georgetown hospital The club purchased two special chairs for patients suffering from arthritis designed to help them get their mobility back says Mr Schaljo G0EBELLE MacADAM ALEXANDER CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS Brian Georgetown Kiwanis Club President GEORGETOWN 37 Main St South 8775155 WITH THREE LOCATIONS TO SERVE YOU BRAMPTON Regan Rd 8405518 Georgetown Kiwanis Club VicePresident Mississauga 8266352
