Memorial Arena Acton Sabres fighting slump By COLIN GIBSON Herald Sports Editor Acton Sabres saw their 196990 MidOntario Junior C Hockey league regular season record tum ble to following a pair of losses in weekend action The losses run the Sabres streak to eight games and the squad has only two regular season contests re maining before entering post season play Acton presently sits in fifth place in the sixteam league with Alliston Hornets occupying the cellar All teams in the MidOntario Junior C Hockey League qualify for the playoffs but Acton will have to improve in a number of areas if the team hopes to travel any distance down the playoff road Friday night Sabres trekked to Orangeville for a joust with the leagueleading Crushers and emerged on the short end of a score Saturday evening at the Acton Community Centre Schomberg provided the opposition but little else changed as the Sabres bowed I thought the team played well against Orangeville said Sabre coach Ken Steen We were a bit but for minutes we stayed with the Crushers Then the referee took the game out of our hands It was a good allround ef fort Orangeville scored two power play goals in the final five minutes of play as the Sabres were forced to play two men short The game was tied ll after the first period and Orangeville en joyed a slim lead heading into the final period of play Then both teams offences came to life with Orangeville outscoring Acton over the final 20 minutes to seal the win Despite the score Jim in the Acton nets had a solid game Jeff Shevaiier Bob Mike Hunchuck Tim McDonald and Peter were the Acton marksmen Shevaiier added a pair of assists as did Vince Rogers and Jason Mil QIC Lucas Saturday night in a game described by Steeiras one we could have won and should have won the Sabres did an aboutface and came out flat allowing Schomberg to post the relatively easy win Schomberg scored twice in the first period once in the second period and twice more in the third period Acton managed but a single second period reply from Jeff Shevaiier who converted passes from Jason Lucas and Bob Gagnon For various reasons the Sabres were lacking in bodies against Schomberg and Steen used the op portunity to give three midgetage players some junior experience Kevin Caswell was inserted in the Sabres nets replacing Jim Mantione midway through the third period after the issue had been virtually decided Paul and Paul like members of the Eds In and Out midget team also saw action against Schomberg We wanted to use them to give them some experience but also to see if they would be able to help us said Steen None of the three looked out of place against junior opposition Sabres played Tuesday night in Caledon against the Flyers at press time the score was not available Sabres round out 198990 Mid- Ontario Junior Hockey League play this Friday with a game against Schomberg pm at the Acton Community Centre Depending on final league stan dings according to Steen Sabres first round playoff opponent would either be Caledon or Schomberg Sabres first home game of the playoff series would be scheduled for Feb pm at the Acton Community Centre GEORGETOWN RAIDERS gels a birdseye view of the action during In Saturday nights dash with Burlington Cougars Burlington posted a 52 win but stood his ground well in making 26 save Herald photo
