THE HERALD Wednesday January 31 Page Minor sports organizations caught in nowin situations It has been noted and many times before but it bears air once again often appears that being an unpaid volunteer worker in amateur sports regardless of the venue is a thankless job that often involves the individual in a no win situation Especially at the community level where far too many times the volunteer workers find themselves stuck between a rock and a hard place trying to please everyone I am referring of course to the Letter to the Editor which ap peared in the Jan edition of the Herald from Mrs G Adams of Ballinafad criticizing some aspects of minor hockey in Georgetown Hal Pells a vice president with the Georgetown Minor Hockey Association replied to Mrs Adams by letter a copy of which appears in this weeks Herald Mrs Adams has all the right in the world to voice her complaints and by the same token Mr Pells on behalf of the Georgetown Minor Hockey Association has the right of reply GMHA president Carson Mininch assured this reporter that Mrs Adams complaints were discussed at an executive meeting and would be looked into thoroughly Ah but there is the rub The minor hockey association will be perceived as merely look ing after its own interests while Mrs Adams who obviously cares enough about hockey in Georgetown to go public with her concerns will be perceived by some as muddying waters that best are left still and calm I have covered sports in different communities for a number of years and am still amazed when minor sports organizations and their so- called supporters come to log- As I See It Colin Gibson Sports Editor with one another and I m not just referring to hockey The clashes have occurred in minor soccer minor baseball minor softball minor lacrosse on Both sides claim to be looking out for the best interests of the respective sports but what they cant or refuse to see is that they are tearing apart the actual fabric of the sport In my capacity as a sports writer and sports editor I have covered a fair number of annual meetings volving different sports I am always amazed when only a hand ful of concerned supporters show up at these affairs which are scheduled to air a number of issues including where the sport is head ed Financial matters are address executive members are held accountable for past problems rules and bylaws are discussed and even personality clashes occur but in a forum designed for the good of the sport not its detriment All too often executive members of a minor sports organization are blamed for situations beyond their control Misconceptions or if such Is the case accountability or at least explanations of situations that have arisen could and should be cleared up at annual meetings No one is totally wrong but by the same token no one is totally right when problems arise in a minor sports organization However open and frank discussions are Recreation report Applications are due for leader erupted this past summer bet ween the Ontario Hockey Associa the Ontario Minor Hockey Association and the Metropolitan Toronto Hockey League You will recall the MTHL wanted more power and wanted to deal directly with the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association thus bypassing the OHA The issue was finally resolved when a new hockey organization the Ontario Hockey Federation was formed with the three groups under one umbrella under the chairmanship of CAHA president Murray Costello Then a junior hockey division was revived within the MTHL and several teams jumped from the Central Ontario Junior B Hockey League to link up with the MTHL The Sutherland Cup emblematic of Junior B hockey in Ontario was won last year by the now defunct St Michaels Buzzers However the OHA runs the pro vincial playdowns for the Sutherland Cup and since the junior division in Toronto is registered through the MTHL rather than the the teams in the league wont be allowed to enter Sutherland Cup play
