Pages THE HERALD Wednesday January 1990 Halton Police say Too many young people are dying on the roads Too many young people are dy on s roads so police are thinking about taking the message of safe driving into the high schools says Constable Scott Mason of the Halton Regional Police traffic unit Drivers between the ages of and accounted for just over 47 per cent of the 23 fatal accidents in the Region last year Although this figure is down from 50 per cent in 1988 its a negligible amount said Const Mason And about per cent of fatal col lisions last year involved speeding motorists Drivers failure to either obey traffic signals or yield signs accounted for the remainder of fatal accidents Const Mason acknowlHged that students receive drivers educa tion but he suggested they should be told more about safe driving from the polices point of view name the connection between speeding and death This is just one recommendation that might come out of the February is I Love Books at statistics Const Mason is current ly compiling he said But any recommendation will be made by Const Mason s superior Sergeant Ken Bonham Sergeant Bonham won t be able to reveal any recommendations he might make until they are first examined by Deputy Chief ohn Barret within the next couple of months But the overall statistics for col lisions involving death are down from The statistics show there were three fewer car accidents deaths last year than in 1988 In there were fatal car colli sions resulting in 23 deaths and injuries In the 23 fatal car colli sons in 24 people died and 19 people were injured A twomonth crack down on speeding and seatbelt offences on the rural roads in North by the police was a major con tnbutmg factor to the decrease said Const Mason Sgt Ken Bonham formed the Rural Regional Task Force last summer after the number of car related fatalities during the first four months of were more than double that of the same period in 1988 said Const Mason While there were only three car collisions involving fatalities from January to April there were eight last year This pace was a major concern said Const Mason not only because traffic deaths were higher than ever since the bureau s incep tion in 1984 but also because the first four months in a year are usually recognized as slow periods for serious accidents People tend to drive more carefully during the winter he said Dry roads probibly give people a false sense of seem ity The task force which was com posed of two officers from each of the Region districts and two of ficers from the traffic bureau showed no mercy to motorists caught speeding during tit months of September and October The task force concentrated its efforts on the rural roads north of Highway in the kilometre per hour speed zone In 75 per cent of the fatal collisions happened in the rural area of north Halton and per cent of those happened in the km per hour zone The problem is that drivers crackdown reduced the it the rural roads as if they are number of fatalities from eight in Ike the said Const Mason to three in GEORGETOWN MEDICAL ASSOCIATES A Princess Anne Drive are pleased to announce that MARGARET CAWKWELL B sc has
