Stewarttown Stingers In a North Halton Public Schools boys basketball game Tuesday afternoon at school Centennial Chargers emerged on top and have a firm hold on first place In league standings as playoff time ap proaches Herald photo by Colin Gibson Century 21 Minor Atoms Questionable call sours series By DAVE BEAVAN Herald Special In the two years I have been sub mitting articles reporting the results of the past week s hockey games for our group of boys I have tried to follow some simple rules try to make the article interesting as well as informative always be positive about the efforts of the players and the coaching staff and never be cntical of the of A referee s job is a thankless one and not many of us would want to wear the stripes for even one game Having said that however I feel I must describe an incident from last Sunday night game between Georgetown and Streetsville which greatly affected the result and depending on the timing could have an effect on Georgetown opening series of County playoffs In the second period with Streetsville ahead lo netminder Kevin fell on a rebound in his crease area Then perhaps out of frustration with only being able to put one puck past Kevin in periods a Streetsville forward jumped him from behind and punched him three times Obviously not impressed with the treatment Kevin was Curtis Hoogendam flattened the opposing forward from behind He fell either on his stick or on Kevin s and sustained a mild in jury he was back on the ice soon afterward The referee who was at the face- off circle at the time signalled off setting penalties It then became apparent that he was also giving goalie Kevin five minutes for speanng and subse quently a match penalty I have since spoken to as many spec triors as I could including those who were sitting above the goal and I have yet to find anyone who saw Kevin do anything other than take three punches for the team One minute he was playing brilliantly in the net and threaten to backstop Georgetown to its second upset win in a row and then he was alone in the dressing room removing his equipment When the convenor received the referee report of the game he added on an additional three game suspension Considering some of the flagrant fouls that both teams committed without penalty this seems like rather harsh treatment for a foul no one else saw except an official looking into a maze of players Scott Herbert was forced to come in cold to replace Kevin and while our boys stood around in shock Streetsville whipped in two quick goals Georgetown couidnt muster a comeback and were soundly beaten On Saturday night in the opening game of the bestof three senes our boys played a strong defensive game with Steven Smith Michael Crawford Shane Thompson and Ricky Clark helping Kevin register a well earned shutout The only goal of the game came when Curtis blocked a shot at his blueline while killing a penalty By the time the puck had bounced to the opposition Curtis had caught up to it and he drilled a high shot to the top corner In Monday nights rubber game Georgetown came out fired up and determined to beat Streetsville to advance to the next round Scott Herbert was in net and pro bably played his best game in two years He made one brilliant stop after another and when Georgetown scored the first goal our chances looked good Curtis Hoogendam was again the man of the hour as he broke in alone and scored near the end of the first period The assists went to Ricky Clark and Andrew Beavan A minute later Brad Kouyoum jian skated in all alone but his drive was stopped and Brad David son couldn convert the rebound We had other good chances but kept coming and two late goals ended Georgetown s chances This was a very well played game and with this kind of team ef fort and the sensational ding of Kevin and Scott this team could still provide some in the upcoming TnCounty playoffs Raiders host Petes Regular season play in the
