team can take a bow They deserve it The GDHS girls received the crown of belles of volleyball in East Senior Girls Volleyball League regular season play by crushing Trafalgar High School Id 156 and Tuesday at GDHS to finish the regular season in first place atop the East Halton League stan dings It was a must win situation for the Rebels as entering the match both teams had a chance of finishing in first place The Rebel match win tied GDHS with OTHS in the point standings but because of the head tohead triumph by the Rebels over OTHS the local spikers were awarded first place Against OTHS the Rebels ap peared to be an entirely different team than the one that squeaked past Bishop Reding High School of Milton in a league encounter last week The Rebels played with poise and confidence against OTHS in stark contrast to their often ten approach to the match against Bishop Reding In addition the Rebels displayed the killer instinct against the team never allowing the visitors to get back into the match According to team assistant coach Neil Cotton We deserved the win The team was strong in all areas and any time OTHS looked to be mounting a comeback the girls rallied and closed the door The Rebels now cross over to take on Halton West Division op ponents in rounds The championships are scheduled for Feb with the win advancing to the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference championship tournament scheduled for the first week of March The GHAC tournament is the qualifier for provincial play The Sabres lost the fifth and deciding game of their Mid Ontario Junior C Hockey League first round best of five playoff series to Caledon Flyers in suddendeath overtime Tues day evening at Arena The loss put a damper on a rous ing Sabre comeback in the series that nevertheless should regarded as a high water mark for theLeathertown team Flyers von the first two games of the series and even the chest Sabre supporters were hard put to find encouraging signs in the defeats The series turnaround began last Saturday when the Sabres dropped the Flyers 53 at Arena Then last Sunday in the friendly confines of the Acton Community Centre the Sabres rallied to post a thrilling suddendeath overtime win over Caledon to set the stage for Tuesday s deciding game that went in the Flyers favor Sabre coach Ken Steen while disappointed was philosophical about the seasonending defeat What goes around comes around said Steen and I guess it just t in the cards for us to win I m disappointed for the players because the way they played and the character they showed throughout the series they deserved to win The guys really dug down deep they got nothing to be ashamed of I m proud of them What it came down to was just too many missed scoring chances Caledon led 20 after the first period but the never say die Sabres rebounded to score three SAME DAY TAX RETURNS times in the second stanza to a single reply from Caledon to enter third period play with the game tied 33 The teams matched single counters In the third to set the stage for overtime A scoreless 10 minute overtime ushered in the sudden death period The Sabre series death was recorded by the Caledon goal 6 into the period Jim once again was solid in the Sabres nets Team scoring leader Jeff Shevaher had an excellent game scoring three times and picking up an assist Mark Brommersma had a goal and two assists while Bob Gagnon had three helpers The season ending loss not withstanding has to be con sidered a success from the team and organizational point of view During the regular season Sabres finished with a record and were ousted unceremoniously from post season play straight games by eventual Junior C provincial champion Bradford Bulls Sabres posted an 11 24 regular season marie during 198990 league play and their gutsy efforts against Caledon have to stand the team in good stead looking to the future From an organizational point of view said Steen the season has to be viewed as a success I think the Sabres regained credibility as a hockey team and that the interest we created in the Acton ty should carry over to next year Hopefully the interest created will result in more people getting in volved actively with the Sabre organization As far as the team is concern ed continued Steen I m hoping to return and right now we would lose only one player Peter Cargil to overage We should have a solid nucleus of 10 returning players and we can work from there The Acton Sabres are out for the season but definitely not down That as it should be Duplicate Bridge The team of Mike Lorusso and Blayne Hillock claimed the Number One winners spot in Duplicate Bridge competition Monday at Georgetown Branch 120 of the Royal Canadian Legion Judy Rivers and Earl Ryder latched onto the Number Two winners position while the team of Harry and Rene March finished in the Number Three winners spot Duplicate Bridge competition is held every Monday afternoon at the Georgetown Legion branch
