executive a resounding show of support Wednesday to ask Helton Region that it pass a bylaw allow BIA member touristoriented businesses to open Sundays The BIA recently surveyed the businesses that make up the group about such a bylaw and results released Wednesday night show 70 members supported the idea It looks like some sort of ap plication will be made to the Region BIA chairman Dan said after the results were announced at the annual general meetmg Wednesday But Mr said the final decision to proceed with the ap plication will be made at the next meeting of the BIA executive March The survey which was con ducted in early February came about because touristoriented business owners were quite con cerned about the possibility of fac ing charges should they open Sun days said Mr Dolliver Seven business owners opposed the idea some abstained from par ticipating in the survey and others failed to reply The bylaw would automatically give certain businesses in the a tourist designation under the pro vincial Retail Business Holidays Act It would also allow businesses presently open under the Act to ex pand their operations without potentially losing their right to open Sundays The bylaw would also permit new stores servicing tourists to open Sundays without first having to get approval from the Region said BIA treasurer Gord Chapman Business owners wanting to open Sundays under the current legisla tion must apply Individually to the Region for a tourist designation In Halton Hills only the Olde Hide House is now allowed to open Sundays under the Acts tourist designation The BIAs interest in pursuing the Sunday opening bylaw should not be interpreted by the public as a signal that the group supports wideopen Sunday shoppmg Mr Chapman said during the meeting The bylaw would apply only to tourist related businesses and it would be left to the Region to define a tourist oriented business he said The will have to prove that the businesses involved rely on tourists for most of their sates before Regional council would pass the required bylaw the Regions executive director for business development Brent Kearse said in a telephone interview The Regions staff in making a recommendation to council con siders how much advertising a store does in areas outside Halton It also looks at whether the business customers come from outside the designated range A stores possible historical en vironmental geographical or cultural significance is also taken into account The Region passed a similar bylaw in the 1970s for Oakvilles Bronte Village said Mr Kearse Between and 50 stores come under the exemption Response to the BIA survey ranged from enthusiastic to apathetic support to adamant op position said Mr Several business owners stated that the livelihood of their businesses depends on them being able to open Sundays according to Mr Dolliver But some wouldnt even consider the bylaw he said One support was counted because the businessman wanted the bylaw to apply to all BIA members tourist oriented or non- tourist oriented Mr said CORMX OF HWY W Sounds of tin EwijrrUSA Quarry tntownvnlrr 9t Region RMlty DtiHnctton Inc
