disappointed The Brampton D Division en try proved to be the nemesis for Georgetown just as they had been for the Acton Firefighters shunting the local D Division entry to the sidelines on the heels of a slim win last Thursday evening The locals had bowed to caster but then doubled Hamilton A win over Bramp ton would likely have guaranteed the team a semifinal berth while even a tie might have been enough The game was tied after the first period and 33 heading into the- f Inal period of regulation play Georgetown leaped ahead 53 barely six minutes into the third period then the proverbial roof fell in Brampton scored three unanswered goals the winner with just 13 seconds left in regulation time to take the air out of the Marc St Pierre saw duty in the Georgetown nets Cory Rioux Greg 30th Annual Georgetown International Bantam Hockey Tournament last Thursday morning Entering the game against Brampton Acton Firefighters had an outside chance of latching on to one of the top four spots in their division which would advance tbem to semifinal action Acton dropped a decision to Hamilton but tied with caster so a win over Brampton might have squeezed the team into the semifinals It was not to be however as Ac ton could only ice players against Hamilton including Geoff McDonnell and were never a factor in the game Brampton led after the first period and extended the lead to 30 and the Grand Championship trophy coach Terry Crawford wasselected the Coach of the Tour nament Barrie Rick Basler was voted the Most Outstanding Goaltender and Bar- ries Brent Crawford was voted the C Division championship by slipping past Preston 54 The D Division crown was claimed by Milton who rallied to edge Brampton 32 With the exception of the win over Pickering all division championships were decided in overtime In crossover division play Mississauga nipped Preston to advance to the Grand Champion ship Final while manhandl ed an outgunned but gutsy Pickering team 130 to gain the Grand and received the Georgetown Referees Association trophy Herald photo Bantam tournament notes quotes By COLIN GIBSON herald Sports Editor It never ceases to amaze me just how smoothly the Georgetown Minor Hockey Association Annual Bantam International Hocsey Tournament actually runs This years edition the 30th an nual was no exception Thirtytwo teams involving 63 games over a sevenday period competed for tournament honors and aside from minor glitches everything went as planned and pretty well bang on schedule Tournament chairman Rich Hume and his support staff deserve congratulations for a job well done With nary an exception coaches and participating team of ficials dropped by the tournament office at Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena to offer thanks and com pliments The tournament committee in cluded Tony Finn Brian Javies Carson Mininch Karen Hume Lorraine and Rick Buick Vicki and George Ballentine Wayne and Judy Pries Roger Gervais Bob Dezeeuw Scott Vandervalk Jeff Hannah Charlie Hanman Harvey Green Wayne Dixon Keith Bennett Norm and Tom Lush Other people who volunteered their time and energies deserve credit as well While their names might not be published their ef forts are appreciated and not un noticed by those who care about minor hockey Gerry Perkins while some of his calls might have the players looking skyward and also looking for a place to hide when his legendary temper erupts he was always there for the players no matter what time of day or night He is a part of Georgetowns sporting history and rightly so The countless hours and energy he has devoted to sports in Georgetown cannot be measured It is however the measure of the man A CLASS ACT The edition of the Georgetown Minor Hockey Association annual Bantam Inter national Hockey Tournament marked the fond farewell of official Gerry Perkins worked the first tour nament way back when and he will be sorely missed He almost seems to go along with the hoopla of the event and the hordes of young hockey players that invade Georgetown for the tournament will still work some minor- hockey games but decided bantam He also and ANOTHER CLASS ACT Georgetown resident Bryan Lewis the National Hockey Leagues Director of Officiating once again donned the blades and in this years tournament He worked the early game morning between Milton and Brampton and needless to say the youngsters were thrilled to have him on the ice HARDEST INTERVIEW This had to be the one involving young Andy Burns and Ricky Hume who were on hand to present Brad Can- sick of Temors with the Red and Jean Trophy as the tournaments Most Sport smanlike Player When asked what team he played for Andy thought for a mo ment then replied Im not too sure of thename but theyre short guys just like me Okay I as I turned atid asked him what team he played In t Bryan Lewis with an air of confidence but were not as short as turn he con cluded pointing a finger at Andy For the record Andy Burns plays in the GMHA Tyke House League with Terra Cotta Cookies and Ricky Hume plays in the GMHA Novice House League with Johnson and Associates YEAH BUT WHOS KEEPING SCORE Granby Quebec manager Rene Constantin was having pro blems keeping his players minds on the important games those on the ice As he explained two carloads of young females traded bis team to their motel made sure the boys were in their rooms alone he explained But what can you do Boys will be boys and girls will be girls Vive les francais INTEGRITY IMPORTANT Bantam tournament organizers in sist on proper documentation of players before the player steps on the ice and rightly so Illegal players can only sully a tourna ments reputation A report out of the Metropolitan Toronto Hockey League last week announced that the MTHL bad suspended a player for three years and thrown his team out of the playoffs because the player falsified documents concerning his age The player on ft mjdgeAteam tlgpnrfjriVTh-yl- sion and team penalty was handed down by MTHL president John Gardner TORN BETWEEN TWO FAVORITES A number of Georgetown residents taking in this years bantam tournament could be overheard making plans to trek to Owen Sound this Satur day The OHLs Owen Sound Platers and the Sudbury Wolves are engaged in a fust round playoff series and local interest is running high Georgetown hockey products Adam Bennett and Trent Cull face- off against each other Bennett is a bulwark on the Wolves defence while Cull is a valued member of the Platers rearguard The two attended the recent Georgetown Hockey Heritage Council awards dinner and traded quips with their former coach Peter Sturgeon of the Georgetown Raiders The Platers are favored in the playoff series as they dominated the Wolves over regular season play Platers presently lead the opening round playoff series 10 The second game in the series was played Tuesday evening at press time the score was not available The teams play in Sudbury Thursday to then return to Owen Sound Saturday for the pm scheduled game GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN Georgetown resident John McCauley who died unexpectedly last summer was a fervent step- porter of the Georgetown bantam tournament He took time during his National Hockey League ereeing career to work tourna ment games and even after he was elevated to the position of NHL Director of Officiating preceding Georgetowns Bryan Lewis be still made appearances at tourna ment games Projected future hockey super star Eric Lindros playing Oshawa Generals hasnt forgotten either McCauley was a close friend of the in memory
