Page 14 THE HERALD Wednesday March 28 1990 Halton police take to the courts for some dunking The police arrived in force at Georgetown District High School Friday but only to do some travelling and dunking Regional Police in a strong effort to better relations between students and police of ficers have implemented a new program called the Student and Police Organized Recreation Team SPORT The first SPORT game of basketball was played at the Georgetown high school against a team consisting of the junior boys team and the senior girls team The entire idea of the program is to get into the high schools and mingle with the kids said Sergeant Travor Hay Sgt Hay noted the police already have good contact with elementary students but have normally only contacted high students by lecturing them or confronting them The eventual goal is for a better understanding between the students and the police he said In September Sgt Hay is hoping to have a continuous lineup of high schools to play on a regular basis We hope to play all schools he added The program is still in its in fancy Sgt Hay said He issued the challenge to a number of schools and Georgetown accepted he said As soon as the gauntlet had been dropped a bunch of officers got together Sgt Haj said He added the program was set up just to have fun The bluecoats coach Constable Bill Henshaw noted Well we em He quickly added he was glad it was the junior boys and not the seniors Const used to play volleyball with the police against the schools He says while he en joyed playing with the students the students also seemed to get a kick out of it After a number of volleyball games a number of students met him on the street and asked remember me The volleyball program worked he said Const Henshaw added the new program should work as well Rick Redshaw was the coach of the students team While he was happy to see the program starting at Georgetown before the game he said he was a bit concerned that he would be given a couple of technical fouls and thrown out of the game Mr said the referee were students who had been warn him and saying we 11 get you The concerns may have been founded since he was not thrown out His bench did receive one technical foul Const remembered Because GDHS took the challenge so fast the basketball uniforms were unavailable Sgt Hay said The uniforms are being paid for by the Cooperators In Services he added The SPORT program has been received well by the Halton Board of Education Sgt Hay said So while he waits for more challenges to be accepted by schools he is also calling for the police officers to sign up for games or help cover for those who want to play Sgt Hay said the police need a minimum of officers ready to cover or dribble because the force needs 10 players to a game
