from across Ontario competed this past weekend in the Midget Boys Under 16 Ontario Volleyball Championships The Westside team comprised of players representing Halton and Peel regions went undefeated during the tournament as has been the case throughout the season the medal round saw the Scarborough Lunatics defeat Athens Alpha for the bronze medal Powerful Rangers took London Attack in the best twoof three games by scores of 151 and giving the gold medal and provincial championship This feat has qualified to represent Ontario at the Cana dian National Championships to be held in New have the opportunity of deciding their own fate Acton novice team bows to Fergus The Acton Leathertown West novice hockey team bowed out of further Hub League playoff action after dropping a overtime decision to Fergus in a game played in Fergus March The win gave Fergus the best semifinal playoff series in three straight games Acton came close to upsetting toe heavily favored Fergus squad in regulation time but simply ran out of steam in the deciding over time period Acton led 10 after two periods courtesy of David Owens unassisted goal but with just over four minutes left in regulation time counted the tying marker to send the game into the 10 mipute overtime period counted three the win Acton Thomas Wolfer was outstanding in goal and was backed up by a solid all round team Mitch La has been busy trekking the wilds of Northern Ontario recently in search of hockey talent for his MidOntario Junior Hockey League club Lajeunesse who halls from Kapuskasing put his Northern On tano pipeline to good use last year with the acquisitions of speedy for ward Bob Gagnon and rugged rearguard Claude Begin both from Hearst Gagnon emerged as the teams second highest scorer behind team scoring leader Jeff Shevalier Gagnon collected scoring points on 21 goals and assists After the Sabres were eliminated by Caledon Flyers in a first round playoff series was called up by Sabres affiliate team Georgetown Raiders of the Central Ontario Junior Hockey League and acquitted himself well in the Raiders playoff series against Streetsville Acton Sabres finished regular season 198990 play with an It 24 mark a vast improvement over the teams mark of the previous campaign However La jeunesse while pleased with the teams progress is hoping for big ger and better things when the Sunny Acre Farms en route to the championship Major Atoms Star Fuels flame out game There are seven players on that Kapuskasing team with a lot of potential said I talked to both the parents and the players andindicated we would be interested in having them come down to see how they would do against junior opposition Ill be getting back to these players in Ju ly Sabres affiliation with the Georgetown Raiders is expected to continue and Lajeunesse would like to see the Northern players at tend the Raiders rookie camp for a better assessment of their poten tial Lajeunesse was appointed to the opposition of team president after Bruce announced his inten tion of relinquishing the position at a team executive meeting held recently Cargill will still be associated with the Sabres organization in an as yet to be determined position Harold and Al Hay were named vice presidents with Townsley handing hockey opera tions and Hay the business end of things Helen Lucas Is expected to take over the position of treasurer while the position of secretary re mains to be filled Ken Steen who took over general manager duties following the resignation of Robin Inscoe late last year is expected to con tinue in the dual role of general managercoach according to La jeunesse Georgetown Star Fuels Major Atom ended their season on a high note This past week the action against Guelph in an tion match as a warm up game for the final against Streetsville Guelph proved to be a very chip py aggressive team Georgetown however did not retaliate and came away with a 33 tie Goal scorers were by assisted by This seesaw battle continued when tied it up again at 22 The next goal went to Georgetown as Mashinter went down the right side and put a high shot into the corner Less than three minutes remained in the game when Streetsville scored to tie it up again Georgetown scored at the 35 remaining mark on a nice low shot from the slot by Jamie assisted by and Ryan Taylor This proved to be the game win Streetsville then pulled their goalie for a last minute attempt but Pilgrim seeing the open net flipped a nice high shot that cross ed the goal line with nine seconds left on the clock Assist went to Finlayson and at the sound of the buzzer Georgetown had won Both goaltenders Andrew Craig and Geoffrey Beauparlant had fine games sharing the net duties This game ended the playoffs as Milton- emerged top team from Star Fuels pool to enter the Tri County championships Georgetown Star Fuels should be proud of their accomplishment and improved play by finishing second in the pool
