request made by the Halton Council on Smoking and Health HCSH The is asking imately 800 organizations and workplaces that cater to Halton youths to develop a smoking policy A nonsmolung brief has been sent to the organizations and workplaces about a week before the board Is set to review a non smoking policy Peter Gnish the board of tors executive assistant said the policy originally came before the board in late 1968 A survey at that time showed 29 per cent of the students were smoking and almost 15 per cent of the teachers were smoking Mr Gnish said The up dated figures are expected to be out in a couple of weeks he added Bryn principal of Georgetown District High School said he has had a number of students talk to him about the policy While he acknowledges the school has had some problems in the past with a similar policy he believes the situation is not the same This time both staff and students are affected and the students will have had fair warn tag he said Three years ago GDHS students protested with a ail in on Highway 7 after their smoking area was taken away The smoking area was later reestablished Mr also noted it s becoming more and more socially unacceptable to smoke As a parent of two children 8 and 12 years old Mr Davies said he Is glad they will not be able to team how to smoke from other students at the school Mr Davies started smoking when he was 14 for three reasons it was an adult thing to do peer pressure and it felt good Once I started the original reasons but the addiction had kicked in he said He stopped smoking seven years later Walt Elliot businesses was endorsed by the Canadian Cancer Society the Board of Education the Halton Roman Catholic Board of Education the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario and other people and organizations According to the brief tobacco products are the leading table cause of poor health in Halton It also states 90 per cent of adult smokers begin smoking dur ing or before their teen years long before they can legally be given or sold tobacco The brief also notes By the age of at least half of Halton school children have experimented with cigarettes The Halton Roman Catholic School Board adopted a smoking policy in September 1989 The mortality rate for people who started smoking when they were years old is 50 per cent higher than people who started smoking In their twenties the brief states Town gives to Block Parents Town council agreed Monday night to give the Ontario Block Parent Association Si 000 to help finance the 1991 Ontario Block Parent Conference in Burlington The associations chairman Pat Lower told councillors in sup porting the group they are sup porting the protection of our most valuable citizens the children The block parent program has been a part of Halton Hills
