The Acton Business Alert system run by the Halton Regional Police Force has already stopped two known crimes Village Constable Bill Riddle said But there is no real way to tell how many crimes have been prevented since the program began almost a year ago Const Riddle said He said if a man decides to rob a bank and sees a police officer hanging around the culprit might decide it s not such a good idea The system works like a pyramid Const Riddle said Once one business is contacted that business is required to call two other businesses who are each re quired to contact two businesses until the bottom of the pyramid is reached he said The businesses at the bottom of the chain are the ones with more employees he noted The more employees a company has the more liable it is to lose the message before it calls the others Const Riddle actually starts the pyramid when he calls the first business on the lists to warn them of possible criminal activities Since the program started two known crimes have been prevented he said One incident makes it all worthwhile two was a bonus Two incidents of a person trying to pass a counterfeit bill was stop ped when Contjt Riddle contacted the 60 businesses involved through the Business Alert system Each time a counterfeit bill was presented to a cashier it was quick taken back when the cashier at tempted to check the bill with a list of serial numbers Although we didn t catch them it did prevent a crime Another incident was a fraud case in which the alert had been sent on a Friday The following Monday morning a restaurant call ed the police saying they had seen the suspect and within minutes he was caught Const Riddle divided the system into five sections so the story doesn change and it the pro gram a little more managable It helps when you have businesses that are very comraum ty minded like Acton he said The program may also expand into Georgetown later this year he ad ded He also likes the fact that the program is flexible enough to use if a child goes missing Once the alert is sent through there is another sets of eyes looking for a missing child he said The program has been im in larger communities Const Riddle said The large pro grams used a computerized machine to send its alerts he said A personal touch rather than computers works well a small community Const Riddle said A computer will not answer questions if somebody misses a part of the message it will merely hang up and dial the next number he said I guess the reason it does work is because of the personal involve ment he said Whats Cooking
