The Georgetown District High School Rebels badminton team made a valiant try but just came up against stiffer more expenenc ed opposition at the Halton Open Badminton Championships held last Thursday at Lester B Pearson High School in Burlington Only high school trained players were allowed to compete in the Halton Closed event while the field was thrown open to both high school trained and club trained players at the Halton open pionship Despite the highcalibre tion at the Halton Open Champion ships the Rebels team more than held its own The Mixed Doubles team of David Scida and Julie Purvis plac ed third overall and in Ladies Singles Cindy Kallo placed fifth quite an accomplishment consider one of her opponents In a rather perplexing scenano Cindy was matched against a Peruvian exchange student who only happened to be the defending national champion in her age group and who had placed se cond again in her age group in the Can Am games two years ago Needless to say Cindy was over matched The Mens Doubles team of Chris Cambouris and Mike Bosman hard luck of a different sort Chris had entered the Open championship somewhat hobbled by a sprained ankle and despite the fact that the team won its opening match Rebel coach Mavis Neil decided to withdraw the duo from further competition rather than risk further damage to Chris ankle The Open championship represented the next step on the road to provincial interscholastic competition but with a difference From the Open cham only the top four finishers in each category advance and David Scida and Julie Purvis are the lone
