GIBSON Herald Sports Editor The Acton Minor Hockey Association has decided to join forces with Tn County Hockey League representatives in pro viding Halton area hockey players with the opportunity to play at the AAA hockey level on Zone teams The decision to go with the County group rather than with a possible Guelph based AAA Zone hockey operation was made at a meeting Monday evening The Ontario Minor Hockey Association some time ago ap proached the Hockey League offering the possibility of players belonging to their member organizations being able to play at the AAA level on zone teams and TriCounty Hockey League members adopted the suggestion wholeheartedly With Acton being situated geographically basically within the TriCounty Hockey League en virons the AMHA was approached with an invitation to join in the for mation of a AAA hockey Zone operation The formal addition of Acton Monday evening to the fold brings the total of the hockey centres in volved to seven Acton joins Georgetown Flam- borough Milton Erin Hillsburgh and in what has been named the AAA Minor Hockey Alliance According to the new groups chairman Georgetowns Wayne Pries who was elected to the tion by member organizations representatives AAA hockey op portunities will be offered at both the minor and major levels from Novice through Juvenile The group has adopted the name Halton Hurricanes for the representative teams involved Pries expects that the varoius zone teams home games will be played in either Georgetown or Milton but this decision has not yet been finalized The TriCounty Hockey League will still offer minor and major Rep team programs providing young hockey players in Halton Region with the opportunity to pro gress from House League on through to the highest competitive level in Ontario This is what the whole idea was all about the first place said Pries The Halton AAA Minor Hockey Alliance must advise the OMHA of its plans by May but ac cording to Pries it is expected that the AAA Zone teams will be com peting in the upcoming 199091 hockey season Tryouts for the AAA zone teams are expected to be held in midAugust and Pries stated in formation regarding the tryout procedures will be issued well in advance Any player from House League on up officially registered with the member organizations will be eligible to try out for the AAA tone teams the Canadian National Cham pionships in Montreal Que in Deanna and Andrea after sue cessfully completing their sets of 15 compulsory moves took to the floor for their threeminute freestyle routines Both girls easily qualified in the semifinals and then competed in the final round late Friday after noon Although this is only Andreas first year in this A level event she gave an outstanding per formance which earned her place overall and a berth on the provincial team was the last Jr woman to perform and as expected com two beautiful performances that earned her the gold medal for the 2nd consecutive year Both girls now advance to the Eastern Canadian Championships in May and to the National Trials in Quebec Where the top five athletes from each province will vie for the top three positions to present Canada at the 12th an World Championships slated this year for San Antonio Texas in August Earning a berth on the national team is the highest honor an athlete in the sport of baton twirl ing can achieve Last year Deanna was ranked in Canada and her coaches Darlene and Tim King feel that she has an excellent chance reach the highest level Deanna is also joined in the provincial team by fellow Batons East members Liza Tiano who earned the bronze medal and by Elizabeth Pirc who in her first year as a senior competitor earn the silver medal On Saturday the Baton East club continued to dominate the in dividual provincial championship events One of these many victories was again gained by Deanna Guignard who won the junior provincial solo twirling championship Sunday was the final day of com petition where group champions were selected Batons East wrapped up their weekend with yet another two vie- Oldtimers tourney improves with age The Georgetown Beaver Lumber Hockey Tournament took place this past weekend at Gordon Alcott Memorial Arena with 12 teams participating in three divisions and over and over and and over age groups In the championship games Daves Service Centre over powered the Acton Neanderthals 7 in the 35andover division to claim top honors Hay won the MVP award for his one goal and three assist performance for Daves Ser vice Centre Other goal scorers were Harry Vaneshn Dave Paul LaRose Brian Beaumont Ray Peacock and Dave Gnst The MVP for Acton thai was Terry Collins who played a solid game and had a goal and an assist Dave Krause scored two goals for Acton in a good effort In the and over championship Hills Huff Puffers met the Old Timers with the Huff Puffers prevailing 20 Joe goal early in the game was all that MVP goaltender Stan Kruk needed although a goal by Jim Kavanaugh provided an extra cushion Maltons goaltender Bob dart kept his team m the game throughout and was selected his teams MVP The 30 and over championship game went to overtime to decide a winner Early goals by Mike Milne of Dynamic An and Dave Guist of Ar- nles Auto Body evened out the score through regulation time Both were outstan ding making several key stops each to keep their teams in the game and as a result Dynamic Airs Brian McDonnell and Bob Copeland of Amies Auto Body were chosen MVPs for their teams In overtime after a big stop by Brian McDonnell a nice pass by Hilts hit Chris Milne in full stride breaking down the left side and a well placed shot found its way behind the Amies Auto Body at seconds of overtime to the elation of the Dynamic Air Squad The tournament went extremely well and the Georgetown Beaver Lumber Hockey Club would like to thank each and every participant involved A special note to the Georgetown Sunday Niters and Andrea took the provincial championship title This was the very first time Batons East have competed in this event Needless to say coaches Tim and King were very pleas ed with the results of the weekend They have recently relocated to Georgetown and now that they are part of the community would like to see the sport of baton twirling grow in this area The Kings will be expanding their program
