Horticultural Society April is enjoyed an excellent tur nout of regular members new members and visitors from the community This was the second presentation on Landscape and Design for the Homeowner and Nurseries were represented by Zena CalantonJo from me Garden Cen tre and Teas Spakowsky from the Garden Centre The evening was a bub of activity President Verna opened the meeting welcomed our guests and brought forth informa tion on coming events The next meeting will be held Wed May 16 8 pm Knox Presbyterian Church Main St Georgetown The speaker Audrey Miklejohn is a flower show judge from who will speak to us on Roses This is the Spring Flower Show and I hope Mother Nature cooperates All entries must be in between 6 30 and Theme for the show Our En vironment in the Nineties Lynda Baynes Flower Show Convenor distributed the Flower Show booklets and invited all to participate in the show All trophy holders please bring the trophies to the next meeting May 19 9 DO a to 12 noon is the Annual Shrub and Plant Sale Shrubs are donated from Sheridan Nurseries perennials from member gardens Some annuals will be available A committee has been establish ed and is very busy getting organized for planting the downtown area We would like to thank Oxbow Books for their display and sale of gardening and landscape books at both of the previous meetings June 16 is the annual Strawberry Social and Flower Show Spakowsky did an oral presentation on the following con siderations about landscaping 1 Basic decisions to be made 2 Reasons for doing landscapes Budget Plant materials 5 Elements of design Choosing a nursery She then showed us techniques of building a rock garden followed up with a slide presentation on various garden designs and the use of evergreens perennials flowering shrubs annuals and ground covers A video was shown on how to establish a pond garden lily fish or both The door prize a gardening book written by Mark Cullen called A Green Thumb was won by Helen Pinkney Twelve other prize win ners received a pot of White English Daisy a perennial border plant donated by Weal and Cullen The meeting was adjourned and refreshments were served Canadathas warned consumers to stop using direct vent natural gas and propane fireplaces because of the danger of explosion Three persons have been reported injured in Ontario since the fireplaces were introduced two years ago The majority of sales have taken place in Ontario and British Columbia The warning applies to fireplaces that exhaust directly through the wall behind the unit and that have a sealed glass front panel that can not be opened Under certain conditions the burner flame may die resulting in an accumulation of gas inside the unit Attempts to reignlte the flame may cause an explosion shattering the front glass and sending par ticles into the room The Canadian Gas Association has rescinded certification of all brands of gas fireplaces Sales of new units have been suspended until necessary safety modifications have been made Owners of existing units are advised to turn off the gas supply to the fireplace and contact the manufacturer or distributor to arrange for corrective action The manufacturers name can be found on a plate attached to the fireplace or in the instruction booklet Consumers requiring assistance should contact their natural gas or propane
