THEHEKALDOUTLOOK Jane 1M In Glen Williams Developers may get goahead from town Artist protected Old Academy Hills councillors have opened the door a wider for builders to submit development proposals to the town for in and around the area of Road and Confederation Street Glen Williams Councillors decided Monday that developer s applications for the catchment area will be examined to determine if the applications can be considered as legitimate without the town first having com pleted a master stormwater management study The town s general committee which is comprised of town cillors recommended the previous Monday that a freeze on all ap plications for the catchment area be imposed until the town com pletes the storm water plan Monday s decision followed a plea by local developer for the town not to consider a ban on development applications for the catchment area unt he sub mits a plan to expand developments in the Glen without causing increased flooding in the area Earlier this year it was the plan ned expansion of that led concerned residents on Wildwood Road and Confederation Street to approach council arguing that if the development was ex the flooding of their pro perty would increase substantial Town council at that time dead to ban all development tions in the Glen until the town completes a master management plan Town staff recommended two weeks ago this approach was too restrictive The town has received applications that if approved increase flooding in the catchment area Town engineer Bob Austin said he predicted at that time the would be subjected to a parade of people asking for exemptions from the total ban Mr Austin stressed council had given no indication when it would approve the drainage study of the Glen take place The appropriate study would cost about Mr Austin told councillors Acton Councillor Norm Elliott who opposed an outright ban on development applications in the catchment area said I didn t think the original resolution meant no development period until the study is done If that was the case I would have voted against it It ridiculous there is no deadline for a study and until that time no one can even ask for a minor vanance John Sommer Multiple Sclerosis SOCIETY OF CANADA supports NATIONAL ACCESS AWARENESS WEEK JUNE 1016 Wont you In any season it s a joy to board the bus on Mam Street in Georgetown for a quick 25 minute journey to Rockwood Not long ago I went that way on a cold but sunny morning When the bus approach ed Rockwood I asked the driver to let me out in front of the Old Academy just before the highway dips steeply down into the village The noble front of the Old Academy was visible through some shaggy century old evergreens and large leafless trees I thought over the years past To the friends of the late Drenters who rescued the fine old pile from destruction the Old Academy has always been a very special place Many of us gave money to enable to buy a of fields behind the build ng now the only barrier bet ween the Academy and one of those pretentious housing developments that are corrupting the integrity of the Ontario land scape everywhere We know how hard he worked to preserve the Old Academy for future generations and we admire his foresight that made him deed the h stone site to the Heritage Foundation with his younger brother the sculptor Andreas Drenters as Andreas is a caretaker that nothing seems to have changed since Yosef has died was a great artist He have the world countless artworks that have kept their power to move and astonish us Some say his greatest artwork however has been the restoration of the Old Academy Andreas Drenters is in his log house workshop in the garden of the Academy and he takes me to the main house where many new recently made sculptures are displayed the large dining hall and the gymnasium of the former school Andreas Drenters has been selected by The Friends of the Halton Hills Libraries for an ex hibition at the Gallery of the Cultural Centre in Georgetown from June 20 to July 28 Since our gallery here in town is used not on ly for exhibiting artworks but also for many other purposes from concerts to brunches a way had to be found that would make it possi to show sculpture in a multi purpose space without using the floor Andreas suggested an ex hibition of wall sculpture and he went to work and created new pieces that will show all his tiveness and skill in the service of making sculpture that can be hung on a wall The artist used a wide variety of materials from found iron to copper to stone to wood Some pieces combine all these materials others are of one mater only All of them team with wit affection and originality Let me give you some quotes from a remarkable art critic of the sixties who is unfortunately forgotten now Barry Lord wrote for the Kitchener Waterloo Record He came to Georgetown in February to see an exhibition of a much younger Andreas This is what he wrote at that time This sculptor does not simply look for appealing shapes in the implements he collects Rather he uses his elements to outline struc most of these pieces would be equally successful formally if they were non figurative He benefits from either an inspired eye or an untiring patience in seeking out the right parts for his forms For the resulting works look as inevitable and intelligent in describing space as if they had been originally cast and welded solely for sculptural purposes He seldom exploits a part for its gestural decorative or anecdotal effect alone but uses his prongs and bolts and handles to ex press the skeleton of the spatial structure as they are delineating the contours of the figure represented It is the end of May I have been to Europe and have seen many ex ting things and talked to countless people wherever I met them I will tell you about it next week OFFICE MAGIC 136CGuelphSt Georgetown catc THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND STAFF OF LORE ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT
