I THE HERALD OUTLOOK June Page None exposed Catholic schools are safe from asbestos board Students attending Halton s Roman Catholic schools are not facing any health risks due to asbestos an official with the school board says An asbestos report was received by the Halton Roman Catholic School Board at their latest board meeting May 29 The report was done due to the Ministry of Education s order that all school boards in the province tell the government what schools have asbestos in them and where the asbestos is within those schools controller of builders and plants Giacomo said At this point we have no expos ed asbestos in schools Mr Cor baciosaid The asbestos survey was taken in accordance with the Ministry of Education with an addition Mr Corbacio said Reports of the asbestos study have been placed in all of the board s school libraries so parents and students can have easy access to the study he said The ministry ordered all boards to inspect the thermal insulation on pipes valves fittings and equip ment associated with heating systems and potable water Mr Corbacio said This means the schools had all their boiler rooms mechanical rooms and pipes above the ceiling tiles checked he said The board is inspecting all the asbestos used above ceiling tiles and fixing the elbows pipe tions where they need to be fixed within one or two days Mr Cor baciosaid If an elbow is damaged it may become friable he noted If it becomes friable small traces of asbestos can get into the at mosphere and create a health hazard he said No one is allowed to remove a celling tile without written con sent he said This rule will pro bably be lifted once all the elbows have been checked and the board is satisfied with everything Mr Cor said Holy Cross School on Maple Avenue SacreCoeur School on Guelph Street and St Francis of Assisi on Duncan Drive are all schools with pipe above ceiling tiles Mr Corbacio s report points out These three Georgetown schools and St Joseph s School in Acton all have a friable floor covenng the report states Mr Corbacio snid this is not dangerous and a very durable floor that is even used in houses Donald Schrtnk chairman of the board of trustees said I don think it as bad as most people think asbestos is To say there is no danger from asbestos would certainly be wrong he added The biggest danger comes from the material being friable he noted The urgent desire to remove all asbestos helps make it friable and compounds the problem he said Other asbestos areas mentioned in the report but are not included in any of Halton Hill the centre towards it start up costs The town s general committee which consists of the town coun cillors supported the staff mendation to allocate the funding at Monday night meeting As a waste reduction centre Waste Not will accept goods such as a broken kettle fix it and then sell it This way the kettle is prevented from entenng the waste stream siad the centre s spokesperson Diane Van de Valk Town engineer Bob Austin wrote in a report that went before council general committee Mon day that the savings created by the centre will offset the initial cost to the town To collect goods Ms Van Valk proposes the town s fifteen special pick up days when the town picks up such garbage items as mattresses also become Waste Not days People would indicate what item should go to Waste Not and these would be delivered to the centre Mr Austin predicted if per cent of the waste on these 15 days is diverted to Waste Not then the town could save almost The support of general commit tee follows last week s decision by the Halton Region planning and public works to support the idea But the Region wasn requested to give any financial support Canterra Investments has donated the centre temporary persmission to use the Old Black Box space at the Barber Mill to set up the centre As well Ms Van de Valk is confident the centre and Lefennk Transfer Limited can agree to establish a depot combin ed so that people can contribute goods to Waste Not all the time The centre recently resubmitted an application to the federal government s Environmental Partner Fund to obtain a grant over three year People who administer the fund said it was one of the most innovative proposals they ve seen but they needed a more detailed business analysis of the operation said Ms Van de Valk Ms Van de
