and a social time was en joyed Chess Pair share first prize at By CHRIS Herald Special The first annual Georgetown Summer Open Chess Tournament was held this weekend at Georgetown District High School The tournament was sponsored by the GDHS Chess Club by Chris Bertelson and directed by Tim from Drayton Ontario The tournament draw a respec table participants from as far away as Montreal The tournament was run ac cording to Chess Federation of Canada regulations and all par ticipants were required to have Canadian Federation of Chess memberships and are subsequent ly rated by the federation The tournament was considered first class because of the spacious playing rooms and cafeteria vice provided by members of the Outers Club and the Chess Club supervised by Mrs Diane Masters who is cosponsor of the GDHS Chess Club Younger players from London and Sudbury were billeted with Mr and Mrs Mrs and Mrs Stuart a service for which the organizers were most grateful The players were divided into two sections an open section and the amateur section The open sec was blessed with no less than three Canadian Masters including Georgetown s own Robert Hamilton Francois Leveille flew in from Montreal and Dave McTavish came from London The tournament was also attended and supported by the presence of Yves Near Master and a member of the Board of Governors f the Canadian Chess Federation As well the tournament received many visitors including Masters Brian Hartman Canadas number player and Bryon Canada s number two player The tournament director had a rather sticky situation on his hands when a member of the open section stopped his clock and claimed a win on the basis that his opponent who could only speak Arabic had not recorded his moves A verbal altercation occurred Fortunately another player Simon also spoke Arabic and was able to translate and calm the players down The tournament directors ruling was appealed and so an ap peals committee was convened to deal with the matter before the next round The results of the tournament were as follows Open Section Francois and Robert Hamilton shared first and second prizes with four points and Dave appearing was achieved in the conception of the Helton Com munity chess Club The Organizers are pursuing a blending of the high school chess club with members of the community The birth of such a- club will of GDHS Georgetown resident Robert Hamilton was one of three master chess players participating In the Georgetown District High school chess club tournament this past weekend Mr Hamilton Is currently ranked llth in Canada Mr Hamilton tied for first In the open class with Francois another Canadian master player The other Master was Dave McTavish from London There were en trants In all participating
