Page 18 THE HERALD Wednesday July 1990 Novice And Tykes Acton lacrosse teams drop three matches The Acton Novice lacrosse team put out a strong effort against Bora last week but came up short losing a close game in Elora Acton their opponents by a large margin especially in the final period firing 15 shots but scoring just twice while Elora found the net three times on just five tries The two teams were tied after the first period thanks to a late goal by Actons Jason Christopher at Kyle added a goal to the assist he earned on the first Acton point when he received a pass from teammate David and scored at Richard scored the first of his two goals at of the second period when he picked up a pass from Andrew Cue and beat the Elora Elora stayed ahead in the third by repeating their three goal effort of the previous period while Acton managed only two Raju earned his second goal of the game and assisted on the last of his teams markers when he fed with just four seconds remaining The Acton Tyke Lacrosse squad dropped a pair of games lat week to teams from Guelph and Brant- ford The Tykes lost their Monday game 74 to Guelph when they were unable to stop sharp shooter Jeremy ODonnell who scored five of his teams markers Actons Jason McGuire notched two goals while teammates Jason D McGuire and Ryan each scored one Acton had opened the scoring with a goal at 1435 but Guelph sent out ODonnell who scored the other three of the period The game was kept close by the visiting Acton team which scored the next two to tie it 33 The two teams traded one goal before Guelphs ODonnell netted the win ner at 73 of the second period Guelph managed to put two more goals past netminder Eddy Hess in the third period putting the game out of reach The Acton team had an even rougher time two days later when they played Brantford and lost after facing another scoring machine Brantfords Thomas Montour blasted in nine goals overshadow ing Actons Ryan who managed four markers for the visitors close games with of them decided by just one run EXPOS 8 The Halton Credit beat the Glendale Charters Expos led by Chris Foster who hit a home run and cashed in three runs for his team Teammate Mike Kitchen had two base hits as well and John Howell sparkled on defence most notably when he nailed a runner with a great throw to home plate Not to be outdone Glen Wood of the Expos also bashed a home run and collected three RBIs Ryan also had two base hits and was credited with two RBIs Great fly ball catches by the Ex pos go to Mike Watts Andrew Ter rell and Baker Robin made an outstanding play as he made a good out on third base BLUE JAYS 8 DODGERS Good throws and catches were displayed by Matthew Hotham and Kris Noonan of the Jays as they provided the defence necessary to keep the game close Nathan Mar tin backed up his teammates with the bat earning two RBIs For the Dodgers Adam Goddard replied with two base hits and three BIs while Mark got a home run and three The Dodgers had trailed in scor ing until late in the game when Chris Kilmer knocked in two runs and contributed some defence when he made a great fly ball catch BLUE EXPOS 15 The Blue Jays had another good game this week beating the Glen Charter Expos by just one run inaslugfest Matthew Hotham did well for the Jays reaching base with three singles and cashing in three runs Chris Meyers helped out the defence with two great fly ball cat ches For the Expos Ryan had two hits and one and Tho Arnold also had three base hits and twoR BIs Other Expos who batted in runs were Sam Southworth and Robin Deeley who each had three TIGERS ROYALS Trailing the Tigers made a great team effort and came back to beat the Optimists Royals 75 Tigers Chad Gemmill played ex ceptionally well as he had a triple and three RBI for his side Good hitting was also featured by Brent McClung Paul Farmer and Adam Moy Defence was also sparkling for the Tigers with Brian Normore leading the way with a great ground ball catch and throw to first base Andrew Wright made a good fly ball out and Brad picked up a grounder for another out Good pitching was also evident in this game with three Tigers Brent McClung Brian and first timer Andrew Wright teaming up for the win For the Royals David had two base hits and one RBI along Ryan who had two base hits and one R B I The Royals defence wasnt too shabby either as third baseman Travis Dares fired a heater across the diamond to nail the runner at first Jason had a good eye on the grounders as he picked up two for some easy outs DODGERS 9 The Countrywide Dodgers played well as they beat the Halton Credit Union As by one run Good plays by the Dodgers go to Calvin Simmie for his two base hit and Jeff Meinen for his triple Justin Hunt Adam Goddard and Jeff Meinen all earned RBIs while Justin Hunt played good defence with two fly ball catches The As outstanding plays go to John Howell for his two base hits and Mike Krause for his two Brenda Alexa also earned an RBI while teammate Mathew Hall scored one to close out Actons production for the game Halton provincial grants help fitness programs TORONTO Provincial grants totalling 320000 will allow the On tario Group Fitness Office to support fitness programs in organiza tions and communities throughout Ontario Oriole Elinor Caplan announced the two Fitness Ontario Leadership Program grants today on behalf of Ontario Minister of Tourism and Recreation Ken Black This funding will benefit not only fitness instructors and par ticipants but also the organizations which give support to fitness pro jects throughout Ontario Mrs said A 150000 grant will help the Ontario Group Fitness Office continue to give administrative support to the Ontario Fitness Council and the Ontario Association of Sports Sciences The second grant of will assist communities in hosting fitness workshops is a program designed to train fitness leaders It consists of a series of fitness workshops which address many aspects of fitness leadership including prepost natal fitness exercise design and counselling The Fitness Ontario leadership Program is a training program designed to improve the skills of the provinces fitness leaders The program has two components The first is OL P The Babies a day introductory fitness leadership The second component consists of six oneday specialized courses in the areas of management dance music prepost natal fitness nutrition and counselling The Fitness Leadership Consultant in the Ministrys Sports and Fitness Branch provides program development services associated with the program The Group Fitness Office coordinates courses held across the province In addition consulting services are provided to each group or organization wishing to design training
