serious head injury to a local slopitch player marred an other wise successfully run tournament on Sunday at the Fairgrounds Ian Cnchton owner of the Mus Works in Georgetown was pit ching for his Sea Air team in the semi final game when he was hit on the temple by a line drive Witnesses said Cnchton had at tempted to get out of the way but was struck by the softball He had gotten up afterwards but soon col lapsed when cranial swelling began and forced organizers to call for an ambulance Crichton was first taken to Georgetown and Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Credit Valley Hospital In Mississaugua Friends of the ly said he had been operated on but was in a coma and is still in critical condition His team mates were shocked by the accident but set their sights on the tournament championship One of the team mates said winning the title was a way of showing their support for him The Sea Air team beat the Braves in the championship final while Barb s Oldtimers defeated Club 21 for the Ladies title Yogi from Brampton won the Men s Consolation while Cabinville took the Ladies side Ron Osborne said that while the accident was a tragedy the tenth annual Osborne family ment was successful in its goal of raising for the mentally di capped organizations of Halton Hills I don t have a total on how much we raised yet but we had a record turnout There were 700 people on Friday and 1800 on Satur day with a lot of them at the beer garden I d like to run another next year but right now I going to wait and see how things go Osborne said the accident has upset a lot of people especially since nothing like this was ever ex pected I run four or five softball tour every year and I ve done it for a long time I ve never seen anybody get hit like that before English rugby squad coming to Georgetown The North Halton Rugby Foot ball Club is hosting a junior rugby team from England on July playing them in an exhibition match at Field The team the Yatton Under team is from a small village in Somerset and is on Its first tour outside of Europe which begins in Canada on July and ends on July Sandy McKenzle president of the North Halton Rugby Club said English opponents are becoming a familiar sight for the local organization We played an under team from King Edward VII College last year and before that a senior team from south of London We won our first year but lost last year They have some pretty good teams so this should be another good game will be playing seven teams during their two week tour starting with the Sarnia Saints Rugby Football Club on July 14 They play London St George Rugby Football Club on July 16 and North Halton the next day After wards they travel to Oakvllle If people really like to Watch rugby they could easily travel to Oakville and watch them again on the line of Oakville about a mile north of the Ford plant said Mr McKenzie After the visit to Oakville Rugby Club they play the Ottawa Beavers on July the Montreal Barbarians on July 25 and the Newfoundland Under 17 Represen team on July 27 before they head back home McKenzie said his boys are ready for a challenge from the English team since they will be coming with a few some club Sabres facing new opponents in 199091 hockey season The Acton Sabres MidOntario Junior C hockey team is getting some new competition this year from the Western Ontario Junior C League Sabres Manager Ken Steen said his team along with and Fergus will be playing one home and away game against each of the western league teams while Schomberg Alliston and Bradford will play interlocking games with the Georgian Bay Junior League We 11 be playing home and home games against Goderich Hanover Brussels Grand Valley and Mount Forest a total of games Steen said the idea to change to this format was first brought up by the Junior C League in April as a means of generating more public interest The whole league Is in a very positive mood about this It s the first time anything like this has been done as far as I know It should give us a lot more variety and make the season more in also the coach of the Sabres said the new system t mean the season will be any longer than the games it Is at present The Sabres will play just 20 games against their own dlvison The point system will be the sametwo points for a win and all that But the two will still play In their own playoffs not against each other unless they ad vance as champions Steen said the MidOntario teams were divided up bet ween the Western and Georgian leagues to allow for the most con venlent travelling The more northern Frank Bruno at the Ontano Games for the physically disabled in Etobicoke last week Bruno who plays for the Dawgs football squad set new records in the cerebral palsy class eight for the 100 and 200 metre dashes the longjump and the shot put He ran the metre race in 12 seconds beating the old record of 12 Bruno bettered the 200 metre record of 7 seconds with a time of 25 In the long jump event Bruno travelled a distance of 4 metres an improvement over the old He really outdid himself In the shot put his 11 metre throw easily beating the previous 8 34 mark While he didn t set a new record in the 400 metre dash Bruno said his time of 58 14 was a personal best Bruno said that even though the record setting are complishments to be proud of bis sights are set on the World Cham pionships in Holland Those games run through July 27 and re quired him to leave yesterday in order to allow preparation time He will be competing In the same five events he took part in this past weekend in
