Page IS THE HERALD OUTLOOK Saturday Mr Peewee House League Yankees bounce As 2710 in back to back games The Daves Service Centre Yankees bouse league team took a pair of games from the last week beating than by a combined 2710 score In the first game the Yankees had a big five run second inning which started them on their way to winning Considering the Yankee sive effort and the strong pitching from Kyle Springer Chris Corney Christian Royce Wes Burke and Ryan the difference in scoring wasnt surprising especially when they allowed only one hit Burke helped out the defence doing some pitching as well as picking up a sharp rap to second base and throwing out the runner at first The Yankee third basemen werent idle either with Kyle Spr inger and Brent both pick off As runners The bats also helped insure the win which included Chris scoring a home run on what was originally a single which was stretched out by a couple of As errors PeeWee son of the teams sor hit a triple while Mike managed a double to keep the scoreboard clicking over In the game the next day the As didnt manage to get revenge though they did put up more of a fight It was a good opportunity to get even since the Yankees only showed up with nine players Mike lit up the As pit cher with a grand slam homer in the third inning which proved to be the margin of victory as the Yankees won The same pitching crew as the day before came through again for the Yankees and hope to string together another victory in their next match Purple plant plague poses problem for fishing flora and fauna friends Do you like to go fishing I like occasionally though Im not a fanatic like some of my friends are travelling 700 kilometers into northern Ontario or cutting holes through the ice in January Im more the type who goes to the cottage stops by the village variety store for some worms another stop at the booze store and possibly a trip to the market for some fresh batteries to feed the radio Once I grab the fishing rod and tackle Im pretty much set for the afternoon Considering how things are go ing in the fishing environment late ly I count myself lucky to have a cottage that s on a river Instead of a lake or near a swampy area What Im talking about is the growing threat of the purple plague lythrum salicana a plant that is destroying fish and wildlife habitats across Ontario It s an attractive plant that has a threefoot stem of purple blooms throughout much of the summer However ft loves the wetlands dominating the space used by other plant Life eventually strangl ing them out of existence To make things worse its thick roots con vert the wetlands to soil I call myself lucky since the river makes It more difficult for this invader to take root and dominate the surrounding area with its but the plant can grow just about anywhere If you look you might see them grow in fields or along the road While there are no records of its spread in Ontario its estimated that the S loses 190 000 hectares of wetlands every year Once the other plant species are wiped out the habitat for fish and other wildlife is destroyed br inging fishing season in that area to a permanent halt Whats even more alarming about this plant is that it produces million airborne seeds in a lifetime and half of Ontarios wetlands have already been invad Do you want something even more difficult to comprehend Even though the Americans and Europeans are struggling to find a solution to this problem the pro vincial government has no plans to deal with the threat You dont have to be a fisherman to appreciate what the purple plague could do to our beautiful countryside if something isn t done soon especially if the government continues to do nothing Guelph St Georgetown 8779896 ESTHETICS TANNING TONING
