Josephs Health Cen tre July While others close to her were opting for baseball Mrs Merrill was entertaining them all on the piano Even after her own wedding ceremony to her beloved Earl the guests gathered around the piano to listen to her play Mrs Merrill fell captive to the romances of a Campbellford man they danced to the sounds of George Wade and Corn Hucksters The couple were married soon after Mr and Mrs Merrill and their children Terry and Rhondda mov ed to Georgetown in where they became active members of St Andrews United Church Mrs Merrill sang in the church choir and Mr Merrill became a steward Mrs Merrill was also active in the community as a member of the Lioness Club where she became president Interests in the Lioness eventually led to her involvement in Lions Camp Dorset for Kidney Dialysis Patients the Good Neighbours Christmas hampers funding for hospital equipment and many others as well It was said Mrs Merrill possess ed a rare and brilliant quality to truly understand the feelings of people close to her Friends knew having Mrs Merrill as a friend was to have a true friend who of- Doreen Merrill fered support all through the rough times Despite her illness Mrs Merrill never lost faith continuing her support in the community Her faith and musical talent were great assets to the Choral Society the Bennett Centre the Durham Street Seniors exercise and recreation and a road show entitled Gods People staged by St Andrews Church Whenever the opportunity presented itself Mrs Merrill climbed behind a piano and shared her joy for music Funeral and committal services were held last Friday at St An drews United Church Any contributions are asked to be donated to Georgetown and District Memorial Hospital or the Canadian Cancer Society in Mrs of silver haired gentlemen in the Regimental Green jackets the light constantly catching the glint of coloured ribbons shiny medals that bejewelled most of their at tire Alongside their wise predecessors were the tan dress uniforms of the current serving Lord Strathcona Horse RC Side by side it was very easy to visualize the retirees contrasting with the fresh faces and eager voices of their youthful com patriots they too having had the of youth and the quick step of anticipation The original dress uniform of the mounted calvary were a splash of bright colours shiny helmets horse plumage and lance made their appearance that much more cavalier The years of the was well represented by the old world soldiercavalryman the World War 1 World War Korean veterans and serving peacetime personnel Amid these men and between their conversation and memory recall the women who in no less capacity served as well were as pastel flowers in their dress They too renewed old friendships and perhaps also the misadventures follies and the high points in following the man In uniform Hap pily most offspring of these fine gentlemen and ladies have gone forward with their lives and achieved the highest aspirations for which many in these regiments fought and died to defend As a child of the Canadian Arm ed Services this reunion gave me the opportunity to once again taste the flavour of the forces in their Pomp and Ceremony the tradition and patriotism that in these troubled times in Canada seems somewhat lacking is a constant in the personnel of Canadas forces That part of my life Is now a clos ed chapter but this reunion revives old memories and all the experiences that have made me what I am and it was wonderful to temporarily immerse ones spirit In a cleansing way and to
