Counteracts Environment ICE marched outside Regional headquarters Oakville day Tuesday to protest the possibility that the Region could in stall an Energy From Waste plant in the southern part of Halton Hills said group spokesperson Elsie Anderson The group was protesting a meeting between Halton ing staff and officials from the pro vince s Ministry of Agriculture said Ms Anderson The talks said the ICE spokesperson centred on the areas in Halton Hills that mav have to be rezoned to meet the town long term industrial needs No one at the Region could be contacted before press time to con firm if it was true I don think the meeting is about incineration but once agriculture lands are rezoned to in dustnal that will pave the way for an EFW plant said Ms Anderson The group was formed this past weekend and so far has 35 members The residents who live in the southern part of Halton Hills feel heir proximity to the and QEW make them a prime target for an EFW plant she said EFW is way of generating using non recyclable The four plants the Region are reviewing are located between the Fourth and Fifth Lines north of Sideroad at Trafalgar Road south of Sideroad at Highway 25 and Sideroad and between the Fourth and Sixth Lines south of Steeles Avenue The Region has already in its first choice is to enter into a contract with St Lawrence Cement to use the company s ment kiln in in dealing with farm land severance applications that except for the provinces Ministry of Agriculture are by other commissions North Walt Elliot said the NEC should consider the ministry s comments as an opinion rather than a directive In these cases which arise throughout the escarpment area the NEC has overriding authority because it knows the lands under its jurisdiction better than the Ministry of Agriculture said Mr Elliot He acknowledged the may be challenged but this possibility deter the NEC said Mr Elliot The issue of whether the com mission should overrule comments made by or better than the ministry he said Mr Whitbread said the NEC is currently reviewing the NEP and it is considering eliminating the food and agricultural guidelines from the plan But even if the com mission decides to take the guidelines from the plan they could still be included in the end The province will have to give final ap proval to any changes that come out of the review hesaid Failing to
