Happy Holidays 1 DID YOU KNOW Only some pounds of bronze remain from the breech knobs of two Russian cannons captured frig the last great battle of the Cn mean war This bronze has been the source of all Victoria Crosses the highest decoration for acts of heroism by soldiers sailors and airmen of the commonwealth for more than 126 years During the Crimean War it was suggested to Queen Victoria that she institute an award worthy of the uniqueness of these deeds and the Victoria Cross was created with the simple twoword inscrip tion For Valor The Victoria Cross cannot be awarded to civilians unless they are serving with the armed forces The George Cross was created for that purpose The first took place on in Hyde Park don when Queen Victoria personal ly pinned the Cross to the tunics of 61 of the 111 Crimean War reci Pioneer Festival offers free tun On Sunday August 5 kids and their families are invited for a free day of fun food and history at the Halton Region Museum From 11 a until m the Museum will be staging the Kids Pioneer Festival as part of Midsummer 90 Activities for kids 10 years of age and younger will include print making cooking scones and butter in the log cabin and weaving with wool mak ing and tasting icecream nail driving and crosscut saw con tests games and races a treasure hunt for information and prizes and sitting in on a oneroom school class Robert Dunn from the 11th Hussars was the first Canadian to win the Vic toria Cross and he did so on The Charge of the Light at the Crimean battle of Balaclava Since then 93 Canadians or foreign nationals serving in Canadian units have received the award of them in the First World War All were brave It was not their rank or their length of service that was the criteria They saw what had to be
