Page 12 THE HERALD Wedoeiday 1990 Actions by Mohawk Warriors anger local MP I havent been to Ottawa for a few weeks I havent been speaking to the minister responsible for In Affairs I dont know what the governments official position is on whats happening now in Oka and and northern Ontario But I have my own thoughts And they may make some of the people calling my office in support of the Mohawk warriors angry So belt On the news the other night I saw senior members of the various governments involved shaking hands with a man dressed in battle fatigues with a mask over his face I didnt like that it was not an image of Canada that I can ac cept That Mohawk warrior as he calls himself belongs to a group of homegrown terrorists who carry automatic assault weapons and were involved in a gun battle in which a policeman died They sit behind a barricade of police vehicles After weeks of this stuff taxpayers are now footing the bill to have several thousand federal troops moved to the front line In northern Ontario two major railway lines are blocked by Indian bands as write this Cross country freight is backed up everywhere and CP Rail is losing something like a million bucks a day Other natives block the Trans- Canada highway and truck traffic is being diverted through the S The natives have laid claim to most of Canada now and tell us they want complete political in dependence from as they say what you call Canada People living in a Montreal suburb are cut off from their jobs because other natives have block ed access to a major bridge There have been riots and intolerance violence and anger Imagine if the same happened here say across the eastbound lanes of the at Highway Imagine how the lives of Toronto bound commuters would be changed Imagine how they feel Do these native people have a case Sure they do The process of set tling land claims stinks Its got to be changed Maybe there should be a Royal Commission on Aboriginal People But what are the facts here What justifies guns calling in the army or the life of that police of ficer Whats fair about the situation todays Canadian taxpayers contribute about billion a year to the Fashions For The Young At Heart They pay far fewer taxes than the rest of us And there have been very significant land set tlements over the past couple of years one of them giving over more than 50 square miles But its not enough okay I agree Native peoples were abused for generations Our collective white guilt has much to justify it But there comes a time to draw the line Forme this is it It would not be fair to allow the warriors amnesty after what has happened The government is right to deny it They are subject to Canadian law and the last time I looked it was against the law to block roads block rail lines block off bndges carry assault weapons in public to fire them to resist police to seize and destroy police vehicles or kill an officer The goal settlement of claims does not justify any of this Violence just breeds more of the same Canada is not Iraq or Lebanon or any other country where democracy is on We do not need professional mercenaries many of them terroriz ing our country A single Indian Elijah Harper held up Meech Lake As an elected politician that was his right Working within the system he did what he thought was best Harper with his eagle feather was more powerful than any Mohawk with big muscles a heavy mask and a powerful gun The natives now holding Canada hostage are lawless and they may come to hurt their own cause through this display of armed civil disobedience This is not how reform happens in Canada For the sake of democracy they should throw down their weapons bare their faces and show us how courageous a warrior really is surplus is the highest five years despite a weak economy in the S We are not out of the woods yet not by a long shot Theres oil to worry about and the response to the GST But at least its better Hey it may even be a good time All the news is bad
