Agriculture and Food David Ram say and federal Employment and Immigration Minister Barbara McDougall recently announced For some time this program has been of substantial benefit to Ontario farmers particularly those in southwestern Ontario who rely on seasonal workers to harvest crops Im pleased that weve been able to continue to pro vide this assistance Ramsay said Under the program jointly fund ed by the federal and provincial governments is available to help Ontario farmers provide agricultural seasonal housing Grants will be available to pro ducers who have not previously participated in the program and to those producers who have not used up the maximum benefits available during the 198690 pro gram The Ontario Seasonal Housing Assistance Program is funded under the CanadaOntario Memorandum of Understanding Regarding Agricultural Employ ment The program helps pro ducers provide approved housing for seasonal workers employed in the production and harvesting of fruit vegetables and tobacco The current agreement provides grants of up to per cent of the cost of construction or renovation of seasonal housing or up to per worker housed to a maximum of per applicant Individual payments received during the program apply to the cur rent program Between and 558 grants totalling 8 million were approved and housing was provid ed for seasonal workers Under the current memorandum of understanding the CanadaOn tario Agricultural Employment Committee will continue its opera tions The committee composed of members of the farm community and both the provincial and federal
