of the funding goes toward establishing Workplace Programs where employers are involved in upgrading the skills of their employees Ongoing job training is now more common than ever before Lower skills jobs are diminishing with ad ministralive technical and higher level service jobs the rise In the pist employers had the option of hiring trained staff to fill positions uiring new skills There simply won t be enough young people entenng the workforce to meet our future skills requirements mean ing that existing employees will have to be trained and maybe several times Training and retraining are of no value if employees cannot understand the language used in instruction manuals and in tram ing programs Many larger cor with the foresight and the means are implementing literacy training programs in the workplace as a first step to further skills training Unions too are rais ing the issue of basic skills upgrading at the bargaining table In 1987 General Motors aid the Auto Workers Union jointly com milted to give every employee equal opportunity to achieve highly skilled positions employees now have access to basic literacy training at plant facilities While major corporations
